Tokodaltáró can be explored through two themes: the history of a settlement shaped by mining and the locally protected natural area of Gete-hegy és környéke. The Szent Borbála-templom, a local history exhibition room and the habitats of the protected area each offer a different perspective. When planning your visit, consider whether you would like to focus on architectural and local history or on nature.

Church and Local History

The Szent Borbála-templom is one of the sights of Tokodaltáró. It was built in 1924 in the settlement shaped by mining. At a Mass on 14 December, the renovated church and its new altar were consecrated. The construction of the church and its consecration after renovation are therefore two distinct historical milestones.

A local history collection is on display in the building of the Tokodaltárói Bányász Közösségi Színtér. It also has a local history exhibition room, which can be visited during the venue’s opening hours. Check the current opening hours before your visit.

Gete-hegy: Protected Area and Biodiversity

The Gete-hegy és környéke Természetvédelmi Terület is locally protected in Tokodaltáró. The area’s habitat types include Pannonian hornbeam-oak forests, Pannonian downy oak forests and Pannonian sand steppes. The contrast between forest habitats and sand steppes shows that the nature theme is not limited to a single habitat type.

Notable zoological species include the stag beetle (Lucanus cervus), European nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus) and tawny pipit (Anthus campestris). Botanically notable plants include the military orchid (Orchis militaris), marsh helleborine (Epipactis palustris) and flesh-coloured marsh orchid (Dactylorhiza incarnata). For nature enthusiasts, these named species give the protected area additional character.

As another local point of reference, the Tokodaltárói Piac is located in the eastern part of the settlement.

Komorn-Gran as a Wider Travel Region

The wider destination of Komorn-Gran offers a broader regional perspective. The Gerecsei Tájvédelmi Körzet is a nationally significant, individually designated landscape protection area in Komárom-Esztergom, covering 8,676 hectares. Triassic limestone predominates in the Gerecse; Jurassic limestone is also found there and is particularly rich in fossils. These regional nature themes are on a different scale from the locally protected Gete-hegy in Tokodaltáró.

Cultural sites in Komorn-Gran offer their own distinct highlights. The Majki Kamalduli Remeteség is a Baroque monument complex with seventeen hermit houses, a church tower and a monastery. An exhibition there covers the general and Hungarian history of the Camaldolese order. The Remeteség is open Tuesday to Sunday: from 1 April to 31 October, 10:00–18:00, and from 1 November to 31 March, 09:00–17:00. Check the opening hours again before your visit.

The Brigetio Öröksége Látogatóközpont houses an interactive permanent archaeological exhibition featuring finds from the excavations at Brigetio. The Monostori Erőd is a military monument in the Komárom fortress system. Exhibitions and staged scenes illustrate the periods of the monarchy, the world wars and the Soviet occupation. The fortress system, located in the territories of both Komároms, is on UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites.

Another area of interest in Komorn-Gran is Bábolna Nemzeti Ménesbirtok. A guided tour begins with the exhibition on the history of the stud farm and continues in the Ménesudvar. Carriage rides to the nearby arboretum are offered in two carriages drawn by Shagya Arabian mares; advance booking is required. The “Fogat bemutató, ménfelvezetés” programme features four-, five- and two-horse teams, which visitors can try out themselves. Advance booking is also required for this programme.
