A large cross on Őr Hill commemorates a specific local story: Sándor Paulina had it erected in 1856 on the occasion of her marriage to Metternich Richárd. Bajna is home to historical landmarks from different periods; a named strudel recipe is also part of the local scene. The following topics offer some guidance in choosing what you would like to explore more closely on your trip.

Historical Traces in Bajna

The cross on Őr Hill dates back to a specific occasion. The connection between the person who commissioned it, the year, and the marriage makes its origins easy to place in time: it is not merely a cross at a named location, but a landmark from 1856 associated with Sándor Paulina and Metternich Richárd. Anyone interested in the history of individual monuments will find a clearly defined starting point here.

The Csimai Calvary offers another glimpse into the past. The Sándor family had it built in 1732; it was renovated in 1872, 1897, and 1928. Its history therefore includes both its original construction and several later renovations. The complex stands on the site of a village church that was destroyed during the Ottoman period. This connection places the site within a longer local history: the Calvary’s location points to an earlier church building and its destruction.

A recurring tradition is also associated with Őr Hill. Every year on April 30, young people light a bonfire there as part of a small celebration. Its fixed date distinguishes this tradition from the historical construction and renovation dates of the Calvary: it is an annual tradition, not a one-off event from the past.

A Local Flavor: Bajnai rétes

Bajnai rétes, also known as Etus néni rétese, is part of Bajna’s culinary heritage. It is a well-known strudel recipe from Bajna that locals and visitors alike enjoy. Both names refer to the same recipe and give you a specific term to look for as you explore the town. Together with the historical landmarks, the strudel recipe offers another way to discover Bajna: the focus here is not a monument, but a named local food tradition.

More Places to Explore in the Wider Komorn-Gran Destination

In the wider Komorn-Gran destination, Majki Kamalduli Remeteség offers a focus on architectural and religious history. The Baroque monument complex comprises seventeen cell houses, a church tower, and a monastery. An exhibition covers the general and Hungarian history of the Camaldolese order. Seasonal opening hours apply: the hermitage is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 between April 1 and October 31, and from 09:00 to 17:00 between November 1 and March 31. Opening hours may change, so check the times before your visit.

Monostori Erőd offers a different historical perspective: it is a military monument in the Komárom fortress system. Exhibitions and staged scenes illustrate the periods of the Monarchy, the world wars, and the Soviet occupation. The fortress system extends across the two Komároms and is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. If you are interested in the history of different periods, several clearly defined eras are represented here.

Those drawn to landscapes and geological history can visit Gerecsei Tájvédelmi Körzet in Komorn-Gran, a nationally significant, individually designated landscape protection area in Komárom-Esztergom covering 8,676 hectares. Triassic limestone predominates in the Gerecse Hills; Jurassic limestone is also found here and is especially rich in fossils. The regional themes are therefore quite distinct: here the focus is on landscape and geology, while Majk features a Baroque complex and religious history.

Bábolna Nemzeti Ménesbirtok offers another distinct focus. A guided visit begins with an exhibition on the history of the stud farm and continues in the Ménesudvar. The “Fogat bemutató, ménfelvezetés” program presents four-, five-, and two-horse teams; visitors can try these historic forms of transport themselves. For carriage rides to the nearby arboretum, two carriages drawn by Shagya Arabian mares are available; advance booking is required. The stud farm’s history and its different teams give this experience a different character from the monument and landscape themes.

When planning, it is helpful to distinguish between these interests: Bajna brings together historic sites, an annual tradition, and a local strudel heritage. The wider Komorn-Gran destination also offers, among other things, monastery and fortress history, geology, and themes related to stud farms and carriages. This way, you can choose the focus that best suits your trip.
