Epöl lies on the eastern edge of the Gerecse Mountains, in a valley between the hills of Őr-hegy and Babály-hegy. For travelers who choose destinations based on landscapes and activities, several distinct themes shape the area: the Öreglyuk layered cave, views from the hills, and tours linked to community anniversaries or notable people.

Cave, hills and views

The Öreglyuk layered cave lies on the side of Őr-hegy facing Epöl. It illustrates the key stages in the formation of limestone caves, adding a geological perspective to the landscape. Here, cave formation is the focus, not a panoramic view.

From the summit of Őr-hegy, you can see the hills of the Gerecse and the settlements below. The Kőszikla rock formation on Szarka-berek offers panoramic views of the Gerecse, Pilis, Buda Hills and Dunazug hills. The views are different: from Őr-hegy, the settlements below are also part of the vista, while Kőszikla frames the view across four named hill ranges.

Tours and activities in Epöl

The Deák-József Memorial Tour is one of the walking and cycling tours organized in connection with significant anniversaries or notable people from the municipality of Epöl. It combines exercise with a local theme, offering a different focus from the viewpoints.

Paragliding is possible on Palkó-hegy. If you are choosing a holiday apartment in Epöl specifically for this activity, check in advance whether it is currently operating and how to access it.

Nature and culture in the wider Komorn-Gran destination

The wider Komorn-Gran destination is home to the Gerecsei Tájvédelmi Körzet, a nationally significant, individually designated landscape protection area in Komárom-Esztergom. It covers 8,676 hectares. In the Gerecse, Jurassic limestone, which is particularly rich in fossils, occurs alongside the predominant Triassic limestone. This regional natural and geological context is a distinct focus alongside Epöl’s valley, cave and viewpoints.

The Majki Kamalduli Remeteség offers a different theme: this Baroque monument complex comprises seventeen hermitages, a church tower and a monastery. An exhibition presents the general and Hungarian history of the Camaldolese Order. The site is open Tuesday through Sunday: from 1 April to 31 October, 10:00–18:00, and from 1 November to 31 March, 09:00–17:00. Check opening hours before your visit.

Other cultural attractions in the wider destination offer different perspectives: the Brigetio Öröksége Látogatóközpont houses an interactive permanent archaeological exhibition featuring finds from excavations at Brigetio. The Monostori Erőd is a military monument within Komárom’s fortification system; exhibitions and staged scenes illustrate the periods of the monarchy, the world wars and the Soviet occupation. Archaeological finds and military history thus offer a different cultural focus from the monastic history of Majk.
