Kunhegyes can be explored through buildings from different centuries: churches with different floor plans, a historic windmill and distinctive buildings with their own local histories. Those interested in architecture will find several specific points of interest here, distinguished by their construction dates, styles and functions. The Reformed Church, the Szentháromság Roman Catholic Church and the Komlósi Windmill each represent a different facet of this architectural heritage.
Churches and Architecture in Kunhegyes
The Reformed Church was designed by JĂłzsef Hild, consecrated in 1848 and completed in 1859. Its dimensions convey a sense of the scale of the building: it is 53 metres long and 24 metres wide on the outside, and its interior height is 26 metres. Its one-metre-thick walls are also among its documented architectural features. The church is listed as a nationally protected monument. Its clearly documented construction history and exceptional scale come together in this building.
The Szentháromság Roman Catholic Church displays a different architectural language. The Szolnok architect Ferenc Homályossy designed and built it between 1817 and 1820 in the Neoclassical style. The building has a single nave, a straight chancel end, a tower on the façade and a sacristy on the west side. Its structure is defined by a Bohemian vault. “Single nave” describes a church space with one main nave; together with the straight chancel end, this provides a concise description of its basic layout. This church is also listed as a nationally protected monument. Compared with the Reformed Church, the focus here is not on grand dimensions but on Neoclassical design and spatial layout.
Windmill and Historic Houses
The KomlĂłsi Windmill complements the churches with a building associated with historic milling technology. It dates from 1859, has five storeys and is described as a Dutch-type windmill. Its sails can be turned to face the wind. This technical feature sets it apart from the churches: the focus here is not the layout of a sacred space, but a building whose sails can be adjusted. The windmill and the two churches date from the 19th century, but represent very different functions and architectural styles.
The Kunkapitány House offers another perspective on local architectural history. Csávás Péter built it in the 1880s, and it was furnished in honour of Imre Varga, the Nagykun captain. The house is designated as locally protected built heritage. The history of the library building of the Zsigmond Ferenc Városi Könyvtár goes back further: it was built in 1739 in the Baroque style as a single-storey building with a T-shaped floor plan. The dates and forms offer a clear comparison, from the Baroque library building through the 19th-century churches and windmill to the Kunkapitány House of the 1880s.
Getting There and the Regional Setting
For regional orientation, secondary main road No. 34 is a useful reference point: it runs through Fegyvernek, Kunhegyes and TiszafĂĽred. When choosing a holiday rental, you can therefore assess Kunhegyes according to your own interests: the buildings described here are particularly suited to travellers who want to focus on church architecture, historic buildings and a technical monument during their visit.
The wider regional area is called Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok. The Tisza-tó, in the northern part of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County, serves as a tourist centre; the lake and its surroundings are also among the region’s outstanding areas for cycling tourism. The international EuroVelo II route runs along the Tisza through the county. The Tiszakürt Arboretum is also part of this regional natural heritage: it is of national botanical importance, has been a nature reserve of national importance since 2001, and is home to more than 1,000 plant species and varieties. In the Öregkert area, a signposted network of paths stretching 3.5 kilometres is available for walking. Thus, alongside Kunhegyes’s architectural focus, the wider travel region offers its own themes of cycling and botanical diversity.
