Lake Tisza in the northern part of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok serves as the county’s tourist hub. The lake and its surroundings are also among the region’s outstanding areas for cycling tourism. The international EuroVelo II route runs along the Tisza through Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok. This means the lake area and an international cycling route through the county offer distinct points of reference for planning a trip.

Landscape between the Tisza and Jászság

The Közép-Tisza–Jászság landscape unit of the Hortobágy National Park Directorate encompasses the western part of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, including Jászság, the central Tisza region between Kisköre and Csongrád, Tiszazug and western Nagykunság. The Közép-Tisza Landscape Protection Area extends mainly across the Tisza floodplain between Kisköre and Tiszaug. Kovácsi-Holt-Tisza is one of four so-called refuge oxbow lakes in the protected Tisza floodplain.

The Tiszakürt Arboretum is of botanical importance on a national scale and has been a nature reserve of national importance since 2001. It is home to more than 1,000 plant species and varieties. In addition to serving as a botanical collection garden, the arboretum is an important refuge for native flora and fauna. The Öregkert section has a marked 3.5-kilometre network of walking paths.

Museums and cultural venues

The Kiss Pál Museum in Tiszafüred is one of Hungary’s oldest rural museums. It is housed in a Neoclassical manor house built by the Lipcsey family in the first half of the 19th century. Two permanent exhibitions have different focuses: one explores Tiszafüred’s archaeological past, spanning around 7,000 years; the other is ethnographic and displays outstanding objects from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is worth checking the current exhibition details before your visit. The Kiss Pál Museum also includes the Nyúzó Gáspár Pottery House, where material evidence of the once-popular local pottery craft and the original domestic setting are on display.

The Jász Museum also preserves Lehel’s Horn. In Szolnok, the Szigligeti Theatre is one of the county’s major cultural centres. The Szolnok Artists’ Colony stands on the site of the former Szolnok Castle and is of outstanding importance to the county’s visual arts.

Nagykörű cherries and bathing facilities

Cherry cultivation in Nagykörű has a history of nearly 200 years. The Nagykörű cherry is a regional variety, and its tree and fruit differ from those of the Germersdorf varieties. Nagykörű is home to Hungary’s largest contiguous cherry-growing area and its largest collection of cherry varieties, with more than 100 varieties. The growing area and the collection represent different aspects of cherry culture: the contiguous cultivated area and the diversity of varieties. The annual Cherry Festival is the town’s biggest event. If you are planning a visit for the festival, check the dates in advance.

The Cserkeszőlő Thermal and Beach Bath offers a different focus: 19 pools, slides, and beach volleyball and beach soccer courts, providing leisure activities for all ages, families and groups of friends. Facilities may change, so check which services are currently available before your visit.
