Kunszentmárton combines a history of crafts with a visitor experience shaped by the Körös. Attractions range from workshops in a former prison to protected buildings and activities by the river. During your stay, you can choose between cultural history and activities on the water.
Townscape Between the River and the Main Street
The visitor attractions follow two interconnected routes: the Körös corridor and Kossuth Lajos Street, from the main square to the Upper Cemetery. This helps you understand the town’s themes: on the one hand, the river and floodplain landscape; on the other, the streets, buildings, and places of remembrance in the town. The Körös floodplain section of Körös-Maros National Park includes part of Kunszentmárton and covers around 6,580 hectares.
The Körös and Its Floodplain
The Körös has a water-tourism base with a small marina and a free beach. Check the water base’s current operating conditions before visiting. Fishing is possible along the Körös and in the connected oxbow lakes; local access rules may change. Check them before fishing so you can choose the river section and oxbow lakes that suit your plans.
The water base and beach offer a different focus from fishing along the river and its connected oxbow lakes. If you are interested in water activities, you can plan around them and check the relevant conditions in advance.
Craft History at the Museum
The museum is housed in a former prison that operated from 1782 to 1958. The former cells are set up as individual workshops belonging to master craftspeople. The permanent exhibition showcases coppersmithing and pottery; you can also learn more about the work of shoemakers and furriers. A photography studio and a sieve-making workshop offer further insights into local crafts.
In addition to the workshops, the museum displays archaeological finds from different periods, excavated in the surrounding area. The craft workshops are linked to hands-on activities and educational programs. If you would like to take part in a particular activity, check the schedule in advance. Another themed experience is Tömlöc, an underground labyrinth exhibition about crime and punishment.
Protected Buildings and Places of Remembrance
Several buildings and sites in Kunszentmárton are protected as national monuments. These include the Roman Catholic church, the synagogue, the chapel at the Upper Cemetery, the local history museum building, and the windmill on Szentesi út. Two marble plaques on the church wall commemorate 500 fallen heroes by name. A completed monument was brought to Kunszentmárton in the autumn of 1929. If you are planning to visit an interior, check its current protected status in the register and confirm access in advance.
Choose Accommodation Based on Your Interests
Would you mainly like to explore the craft exhibitions and historic townscape, or are activities on the Körös your priority? These two themes can help guide your choices and daily plans. If you are planning activities in the workshops or on the water, be sure to check the relevant schedules and operating conditions.
