Petőháza brings together a place of remembrance, a church with a distinctive architectural history, a collection on the sugar industry, and themes of greenery and water. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the cultural and historical sites and the seasonal outdoor experiences.

Memorial Park, Church and Collection

The Park of Remembrance was established in summer 2016 on the grounds of the old cemetery. Its wrought-iron entrance gate dates from 1847, making it considerably older than the park itself. The site thus connects the history of the former cemetery grounds with a more recent place of remembrance.

The present-day Church of the Holy Trinity was built in 1902–1903. Schiller János designed it in the Neo-Romanesque style; the tower is Gothic Revival in design. The tower houses a bell weighing 4.2 hundredweight, which received a Grand Prix at the 1900 Paris World’s Fair. The construction period, architectural styles and bell offer different ways to explore the town’s history.

The Petőháza Sugar Industry and Local History Collection explores the history of sugar and its physiological role. It offers guided tours and collection-related activities on these topics. From 1 March to 31 October, it is open on Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Groups can arrange flexible times by booking in advance, so please coordinate your visit ahead of time.

Green Spaces, Lake and Medicinal Water

The area around Belső tó is well maintained and laid out like a park. A small wooden hut and a picnic area are available there. The lake is therefore a different local focus from the collection’s scheduled offerings: the lakeside setting and opportunities to take a break shape the visit here.

Petőháza Arboretum also brings together several nature-related themes: protected and native plant species have been planted there. The Petőháza Anglers’ Association looks after the arboretum pond and stocks it with fish several times a year. The water at Petőháza Beach and Thermal Bath was officially recognised as medicinal water in 2004. This recognition is a distinct aspect of the town’s history with water.

In colder winters, a sheet of ice suitable for sports forms on Belső tó and is used by skaters. Unlike the collection’s fixed opening times, this activity depends on winter conditions. Check the ice conditions locally before planning to skate. You can travel to the beach by coach or train; check current connections before setting off.

Regional Context

The wider Raab-Wieselburg-Ödenburg destination extends beyond Petőháza’s local themes. The Fertő/Neusiedler See Cultural Landscape includes wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and lakeshores. The Archabbey of Pannonhalma World Heritage property is also part of this wider destination. The Benedictine monastery was founded in 996; the World Heritage property includes, among other things, the monastic complex, basilica, educational buildings, and botanical and herb gardens. These regional examples complement a visit to Petőháza with their own cultural and landscape themes.
