Matyó Culture in Museums and Exhibitions
The Matyó Múzeum is dedicated to the life and traditions of the Matyó people. Its exhibits cover topics including a Matyó wedding procession and traditional costumes, as well as photography, a blue-dye workshop, the work of a surc maker and a traditionally furnished farmhouse. The visit offers several ways to explore everyday and festive culture, rather than focusing on a single motif.
Matyó folk art, including the culture of Matyó embroidery, is also part of this cultural focus: it was added to UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in December 2012. The designation applies to the tradition, not to an origin attributed exclusively to Mezőkövesd.
The Takács István Gyűjtemény (Galéria) offers a different artistic perspective. More than 250 works are displayed across twelve rooms, including landscapes, portraits, scenes from everyday life and fashion designs. Comparing these subjects broadens the perspective beyond the ethnographic collections.
Hadas and Craft Traditions
In the Hadas district, preserved old farmhouses now house folk museums and creative workshops, where visitors are welcome. The Hadas Látogatóközpont introduces the district, Matyó embroidery and traditional costumes through interactive features. Together, the houses and visitor center offer different insights: the historic living environment in one, and the presentation of clothing and crafts in the other.
Several houses and venues focus on individual techniques. At the Mézeskalács ház, folk artist Pető Anna displays historic gingerbread moulds and explains the meaning of gingerbread symbols. Groups can decorate gingerbread there by prior arrangement. The Üstökös alkotóház presents handicrafts related to making traditional costumes, including embroidery, smocking, crochet and fringe knotting. At the Bútorfestő és Hímző Alkotóház, visitors can learn about embroidery techniques. A folk music event at the Gari Margit Emlékház és Zeneház can be requested by prior arrangement.
More Collections and Special Insights
The Hajdu Ráfis János Mezőgazdasági Gépmúzeum focuses on historic agricultural machinery. Some locomobiles and one of 100 different stationary engines are operated. Children can also climb aboard one of the 60 tractors. This adds a hands-on encounter with agricultural machinery to the cultural and historical themes.
Sports, Parks and Bathing
Two squash courts at the Hadnagy Úti Sportcentrum are available year-round. From spring to autumn, visitors can also use two sand tennis courts, a footvolley court and outdoor fitness equipment. The seasonal facilities add activities that are available only during part of the year.
Kavicsos-tó Szabadidőpark has a playground with a sandpit, slides and climbing equipment, as well as a basketball court and outdoor fitness equipment. In 2020, a community area with a health park was created in front of the Zsóry-Bad. Around the central square, it has a playground, a running track and fitness equipment.
Zsóry Gyógy- és Strandfürdő offers, among other things, a children’s pool and a paddling pool, a wellness area with saunas, a steam cabin and a whirlpool, aromatherapy oil massages, and experience pools. The facility has a total of eight indoor and outdoor slides; operating schedules may vary. A paved cycle path connects the spa with Mezőkövesd. Check the route conditions before setting out.
