Karst Landscapes and Caves
The Baradla-Domica cave system is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Caves of the Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst. The short Aggtelek cave tour is rated easy, is 1 kilometer long and takes 60 minutes. This makes it possible to plan the distance and time needed for this cave visit.
A nature trail connecting the Aggtelek and Jósvafő entrances to Baradla Cave offers another perspective on the cave area. Along the way, it introduces the natural and cultural history of the region. The Szent-István Cave, meanwhile, is known for its impressive stalactite formations.
Trails, Forests and Nature Experiences
The Zemplén Landscape Protection Area is part of the Zemplén Mountains. The mountains’ landscape influences the area’s plant and animal life. The range belongs to the Eperjes-Tokaj Mountains, which connect to the Carpathians to the north in Slovakia.
The Lillafüred nature trail introduces local historical sights and natural features. Nearby, the Szinva Waterfall is another striking natural landmark; it is considered Hungary’s highest waterfall. The forest railway runs from Diósgyőr via Lillafüred to Garadna. Since schedules may change, check the times before your journey.
The parkland of Miskolctapolca forms an arboretum with numerous native species. It includes a boating lake with several small islands. Another nature experience awaits at Miskolc Zoo and Cultural Park: its nature trail features a 9-meter-high observation tower and a 32-meter-long suspension bridge.
The Majál Tours from Majális Park cater to different levels of ability and distance: options range from easy half-hour walks to half-marathon distances. You can also go horseback riding in Jósvafő at the Kúria Lovasbázis grounds. Check current booking options in advance.
History, Culture and Thermal Pools
Diósgyőr Castle flourished during the 14th-century reign of King Louis the Great. Later, it served as a residence and as a wedding gift for six queens. The Miskolc National Theatre offers a different cultural experience: it is a performing arts complex with five stages.
In Sárospatak, the Reformed College preserves treasures of Hungarian Protestant culture. The Basilica of St. Elizabeth and the House of St. Elizabeth bring the world of the Middle Ages to life. If you are also looking for thermal pools and a sauna world, you can find both at Végardó Bath in Sárospatak. Since facilities may change, check the latest information before your visit.
Tokaj Wine Country and Cellars
The Tokaj wine region is legally protected as a designated wine-growing area. Its climate, soil quality and slope exposure are suitable for growing grapes. These landscape conditions give the region a distinctive character among the travel experiences of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén.
Cellars are also among the region’s special discoveries: the Ungvári cellar maze in Sátoraljaújhely connects at least 27 cellars and covers an area of 50,000 square meters. Another cellar complex lies beneath the park of Rákóczi Castle in Sárospatak. It is about 2,000 meters long and includes two wine-tasting rooms.
