The Nagyharsány Sculpture Park is the starting point for guided tours to the summit of Szársomlyó; within the park, a panoramic trail and an art program explore different aspects of the place. You can view the mountain as the destination of a guided tour or focus on artworks during a walk around the park.
Sculpture Park and Szársomlyó
The Duna–Dráva National Park Directorate offers guaranteed, expert-led tours year-round, five times a week, for individuals and groups from the Nagyharsány Sculpture Park to the summit of Szársomlyó. If you plan to join this tour, coordinate the practical arrangements with the Directorate before your trip.
Opened in 2020, the Kikerics Panorama Trail runs through the Sculpture Park and introduces the values of Szársomlyó. The approximately one-and-a-half-hour program at the Nagyharsány Sculpture Park has a different focus: it begins in the reception building with a short introductory talk about art. A tour then takes you to characteristic works from different periods. Please arrange your participation in advance.
Your choice depends above all on the focus you want: the guided tour leads to the summit, while the art program explores the works in the park through a talk and tour. The history of the Nagyharsány Sculpture Park dates back to 1967, when the idea arose to establish a sculptors’ colony in the former quarry on Szársomlyó. The park’s history thus connects this former quarrying site with an artistic project.
Festival and Cycling Route
Nagyharsány has been one of the venues of the Ördögkatlan Festival since its early days. Since dates and programs can change, check the latest details before deciding when to stay. This lets you plan a festival visit around the actual event calendar rather than basing your trip on an assumed date.
There is also a specific point of reference for a cycling trip: Nagyharsány is part of the Háromfolyó cycling route. Before setting out, check an up-to-date route map to consult the route for your plans. The festival and cycling route offer different ways to shape your stay: event dates guide your planning in one case, while the documented route connection provides a point of reference in the other.
More topics in the wider destination of Baranya
The wider destination of Baranya offers further distinct cultural attractions. In Pécs, the early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae includes decorated tombs from the 4th century. The burial chambers were built underground, connected to above-ground memorial chapels, and decorated with richly detailed Christian wall paintings. The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter features the exhibitions “Golden Age of Zsolnay,” “Pink Exhibition,” and an exhibition on the family and factory history.
The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter also offers children outdoor playgrounds, an interactive lab, a planetarium, the Bóbita Puppet Theatre, a ceramic painting workshop, and classes at the Hercules Workshop. In Siklós, the castle offers a different cultural focus: it is one of Hungary’s best-preserved military complexes and one of the country’s most significant Renaissance buildings. Modernization of the museum wing opened the previously inaccessible Gothic section to visitors.
Culinary experiences are also among Baranya’s attractions: in the cellar row of Villány, you can go from cellar to cellar throughout the year to sample wines and food.
