Nearby Dinó Park focuses on the history of the Earth and palaeontology. Lake Kökényi-tó is the smaller lake in the Malomvölgyi lake system near Kökény; the Catholic Chapel of the Holy Cross in Kökény was built in 1767. Exhibitions, landscapes and sacred architectural history therefore offer different themes to consider when planning your trip.

Dinó Park: the history of the Earth and a play area

At nearby Dinó Park, you can learn about the history of the Earth and palaeontology. Life-size dinosaurs are on display, and alongside the exhibition there is a play area with skill games. The exhibition and play area provide two distinct focuses for a visit to the park. From Route 58, reach the park by turning right onto Időjós út at the sign for Kökény. Check the route before setting out, as roads may change.

Lakeside paths, bridge and viewpoint

A renewed, complete circular route runs around both lakes. In July 2023, it was reported that the six-kilometre route had been surfaced with gravel. Lake Kökényi-tó is the smaller of the two lakes and lies near Kökény. Check current path conditions before your visit.

The bridge by the lake on the Kökény side is used by both pedestrians and cyclists; its renovation was reported in July 2023. A 2023 report mentioned fire pits and picnic areas on the south shore of the lake on the Kökény side, and also reported that fire pits had been renovated and new ones built in several locations. Work to modernise a playground next to this lake began in 2023. Check the current conditions at the bridge and along the circular route in advance, as well as the availability of fire pits, picnic areas and the playground.

Bagolyvár Lookout is a wooden observation tower on a hill above Lake Malomvölgyi-tó, between Keszü and Kökény. If you plan to visit the viewpoint, check its condition and access beforehand.

Chapel and culture in Baranya

The Catholic Chapel of the Holy Cross in Kökény is a historic building and was built in 1767. Its religious and historical focus sets it apart from the landscape and exhibition themes in the surrounding area.

The wider destination of Baranya also offers distinctive cultural attractions. In Pécs, the Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae features decorated tombs dating from the 4th century. The burial chambers were built underground and linked to above-ground memorial chapels; their Christian wall paintings are richly detailed. Another cultural attraction in Pécs is the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter. Its exhibitions include “Golden Age of Zsolnay”, “Pink Exhibition” and an exhibition on the history of the family and factory. The publicly accessible outdoor area can be entered and used free of charge during opening hours. Check the current opening hours before your visit.

A nature and landscape attraction in the wider destination of Baranya is the Ős-Dráva Visitor Centre near Szaporca. It features an interactive exhibition, a demonstration farm area with practical farming activities, and three themed educational trails. They provide information about traditional farming, the Ős-Dráva Programme and the wildlife along the Drava. This offers landscape and agriculture along the Drava as a distinct option alongside Pécs’s cultural history.
