Abaliget combines a walk-through cave passage, a nature trail with routes of different lengths, and two lakes offering different leisure activities. When planning your visit, first consider how much time you want to allow for the route and whether you would rather focus on the nature trail’s themes or the lakes.
A cave passage and three nature trail routes
The developed main passage of Abaligeti-barlang is 466 metres long and can be explored on foot in ordinary street clothes. Check the conditions for physical access before your trip. This figure refers to the main passage; it does not describe the length of a route outside the cave.
The Denevér E-tanösvény nature trail offers three distinct routes: the long route has 13 stations, covers 5 kilometres and takes 3 hours. The medium route has 7 stations, covers 3 kilometres and takes 2 hours; the short route has 5 stations, covers 2 kilometres and takes 1 hour. This makes it easy to plan around the stated durations: there is a two-hour difference between the short and long routes. The distance and number of stations also increase with each route option.
The trail explores geological features and karst phenomena as well as wildlife. Other stations explain how different forms of land management affect nature, how forests regenerate naturally, and how soil erosion occurs. These themes are found around Abaligeti-barlang in the West Mecsek Landscape Protection Area. The routes therefore differ not only in the time they take, but also offer a shared look at natural processes and human use of the land.
Two lakes, different activities
The smaller lake, Abaligeti csónakázótó, is next to the cave entrance. Visitors can go boating and pedal boating there; availability may depend on the local operator. The larger lake, Abaligeti horgásztó, is on the opposite side of the road from the car park and is considered a popular fishing spot. The lakes can therefore be distinguished by their respective activities: boating and pedal boating at the smaller lake, and fishing at the larger one. Check the conditions for boating before your trip.
For a visit with limited time, there are several options to choose from: the 466-metre-long main passage, one of the three nature trail routes with different durations, or the different activities at the lakes. The stated route times make it easy to compare the options, without needing to estimate a walking time for the cave or a duration for using the lakes.
More topics in the wider destination of Baranya
Beyond Abaliget’s local attractions, the wider destination of Baranya also offers distinct cultural and nature-related attractions. In Pécs, the Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae contains decorated tombs dating from the 4th century. The underground burial chambers were built with above-ground memorial chapels and decorated with Christian wall paintings.
The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter offers further cultural insights. Its exhibitions include “Golden Age of Zsolnay,” “Pink Exhibition” and an exhibition on the family and factory history. For children, it offers outdoor playgrounds, an interactive lab, a planetarium, the Bóbita Puppet Theatre, a ceramic painting workshop and classes at the Hercules Workshop. The freely accessible outdoor area can be entered and used free of charge during opening hours; check the current opening hours before visiting.
Nature and regional history also come together at the Ős-Dráva Visitor Centre near Szaporca. It features an interactive exhibition, a demonstration farm area with hands-on land management, and three themed nature trails. They provide information about traditional farming, the Ős-Dráva Programme and wildlife along the Drava. The farming area features, among others, Hungarian Grey cattle, Mangalica pigs, Hucul horses, and old breeds of sheep and poultry.
Other distinct attractions in the wider destination of Baranya include Siklós Castle and the cellar row in Villány. The castle is considered one of Hungary’s best-preserved military complexes and an important Renaissance building. Modernisation of the museum wing also opened the previously inaccessible Gothic section to visitors. In Villány, you can go from cellar to cellar throughout the year to sample wines and food.
