Magyarhertelend has a clear point of reference: the Baranya Canal divides the town, while the Fájdalmas-Anya Church stands on the settlement’s highest ground. A wooded setting and protected landscape features add to the town’s character. The canal provides a useful landmark when looking for accommodation and getting your bearings in town.
Townscape and Orientation
The Baranya Canal divides Magyarhertelend into two areas, connected by two bridges. The northern bridge is at the junction of Roads 6602 and 6608; the other is on the road to the Gazda-Sped campsite.
The built-up area is generally surrounded by woodland. In the recreational areas in particular, private properties and public spaces have extensive tree cover, making the surroundings feel almost like a forest. Forest is therefore not only a feature of the landscape beyond the town, but also shapes the setting of its built-up areas.
The entire administrative area of Magyarhertelend lies within a landscape protection zone due to the Mecsek Mountains and the varied topography. There are 17 springs on the Mecsek slopes within the administrative area. They are designated as nationally significant natural areas protected by law. In addition, ecological core areas have been designated in the forests south of the built-up area and in the forests at the southern tip of the administrative area. The natural communities along the Baranya Canal form ecological corridors. Springs, forests and corridors are distinct features of the landscape.
The Fájdalmas-Anya Church and Its History
Dedicated to the Sorrowful Mother, the Fájdalmas-Anya Church is one of the most distinctive features of the townscape and stands on the settlement’s highest ground. It was first built as a round chapel in 1775 and took its present form in 1820. The church was also available for worshippers to use. Its history can be traced through these two building phases: the original chapel and its later form, which continues to shape the townscape today.
Creative Activities, Sports and Local Products
At the Legendák és mesék háza, you can get creative independently on site during the advertised periods, for example using fabric or acrylic paints and stencils. This scheduled creative activity is distinct from the sports grounds, which include a grass pitch and an asphalt court, both open to everyone. The rotating schedule of creative activities and the two publicly accessible spaces offer different ways to spend your time.
A pump track cycling course is already in place in the planned leisure park area; the leisure park itself is planned for the future. The distinction is important when considering what is on offer: the cycling course already exists, while the larger park is still planned.
The Kapucinus Kézműves Sörfőzde és Sörkert offers demonstrations about Kapucinus beer and the brewing process. Check the current program before visiting. Fruits Vital in Magyarhertelend includes a chocolate factory, craft products and quad bike rentals. If you plan to visit, check the current visiting options in advance. Together, these examples illustrate the area’s varied local attractions: brewing, chocolate and crafts, as well as a pump track cycling course.
