Egyházaskozár combines churches with a remarkable organ, centuries-old farmhouses and a landscape shaped by hills, valleys and ponds. There are also seasonal festivals and activities focused on environmental education, carriage rides and crafts. To choose the focus of your trip, you can look to the religious buildings, rural architecture, landscape or a festival taking place at a suitable time. This gives your choice of destination a concrete cultural and landscape context, without requiring a fixed itinerary.
Churches, Organ and Architectural Heritage
The Protestant church was built in the 18th century. Its organ was made about 200 years ago in József Marschall's workshop in Bonyhád. The instrument has 16 stops and is still in use today. A local tradition is also associated with the church: according to the tradition, it was the first church in the country to receive royal permission to build a tower.
The modern Catholic Church of Saint Stephen was built by descendants of Catholic Csángó people. Together with the Protestant church and the centuries-old Swabian farmhouses in Baroque and Zopf style, it reveals different sides of Egyházaskozár's architectural heritage. Religious architecture, the inherited history of the Csángó descendants and historic house styles give the village several cultural points of interest.
Hills, Valleys and Ponds
The landscape is shaped by loess hills crossed by numerous valleys. The village also features an extensive system of ponds created by damming streams. The hills and valleys describe the terrain, while the formation of the ponds reveals another, water-related aspect of the area. Visitors choosing Egyházaskozár primarily for its landscape will find two distinct features rather than a single nature theme.
Seasonal Festivals
Falunap takes place every year in July. There is a grape harvest procession in autumn, while Kozári Napok takes place in midsummer. These dates place the events in different parts of the year, and Falunap is specifically noted as an annual event. If a festival is the reason for your trip, confirm the date in advance.
Environmental Education, Carriage Rides and Crafts
The Szuppi Youth Guesthouse, forest school and riding stable in Egyházaskozár offer the accredited environmental education programmes “Száll az ének szájról szájra” and “Élőhelyek-élőlények.” For groups, the carriage ride passes through the streets of the village and its surroundings, going past characteristic farmhouses. A short off-road ride can also be added on the outskirts of the village. The programmes thus range from environmental education to a ride combining village streets, the surrounding area and an optional short off-road stretch.
Craft activities include felting, batik, candle making, papermaking and leatherwork. Animals can be fed and groomed as needed under the supervision of an animal keeper. A youth guesthouse in Egyházaskozár also offers, among other activities, riding lessons. The activities therefore range from craft techniques and supervised animal care to horse riding. Before your trip, ask the operator about current availability and participation requirements, especially for group rides and hands-on activities.
