The carillon on the façade of Kecskemét’s City Hall has played every hour since 1983. It was commissioned to mark the 100th anniversary of Zoltán Kodály’s birth. This musical touch is a good introduction to a city whose sights bring architecture, history and hands-on experiences together in different ways.

City History, Architecture and Exhibitions

The Cifrapalota is a building in the Hungarian Secession style. Its exhibitions bring together several themes: alongside temporary presentations, there are permanent historical, archaeological and ethnographic exhibitions. It also houses the Kunbábony Avar treasure, consisting of 155 gold objects.

The Városháza also tells the story of the city through its architecture. Lechner Ödön and Pártos Gyula designed the City Hall, which was built between 1893 and 1897.

The Roman Catholic Nagytemplom is considered the largest church in the Kiskunság and was built in the classicizing late Baroque Copf style. The architecture of this church served as a model for churches built in numerous settlements. In 1993, a decision by Pope John Paul II elevated the Nagytemplom to the rank of co-cathedral.

The exhibition “Kecskemét, hirös város” at the Kecskeméti Városháza Látogatóközpont offers another perspective on the city. It covers Kecskemét’s history from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Music, Hands-On Experiences and Visitor Information

At the Leskowsky Hangszergyűjtemény, the focus is not just on looking at instruments: visitors can play instruments from five continents themselves. The collection includes string, wind and percussion instruments. This sets it apart from the historical exhibitions, where the exhibits and their themes are the main focus. Anyone interested in music and trying things out can keep this focus in mind when choosing cultural attractions in Kecskemét.

The Természet Háza in Kecskemét is the visitor centre of Kiskunság National Park. It provides information about the national park’s nature trails, visiting conditions in protected areas, ecotourism programmes and forest schools. This complements the art and city history themes with a place to find out about nature attractions across the wider destination of Bács-Kiskun.
