Kalocsa offers several perspectives on paprika: exhibitions explore its cultivation, history and traditions, while visitors can follow the entire porcelain-making process at the Kalocsai Porcelán Manufaktúra. This gives you a choice of cultural themes when planning your trip—from paprika cultivation to traditional craftsmanship.
Paprika from different perspectives
The Magyar Fűszerpaprika Múzeum presents the history of Hungarian paprika cultivation and the main tools used in the various stages of the work. The Kalocsa Aranya Paprikakiállítás at the FolkArt Látogatóközpont explores the past, traditions and significance of Kalocsa paprika. At the paprika museum in the visitor centre in Kalocsa, visitors can learn more about the characteristics of paprika-growing areas.
These exhibits emphasise different aspects: one focuses on history and tools, another on the traditions and significance of Kalocsa paprika, and another on the characteristics of the growing areas. This lets you choose which perspective on paprika interests you most, rather than treating the different exhibitions as a single topic.
The FolkArt Látogatóközpont also sells local handicrafts, folk art, porcelain and original paprika products from Kalocsa. This complements the exhibitions with an insight into local products and craftsmanship. If you are interested in Kalocsa’s products as well as its history, you will find a different kind of offering here than at the museums.
Porcelain making, from casting to firing
At the Kalocsai Porcelán Manufaktúra, visitors can follow the entire porcelain-making process, from casting to firing in the kiln. This sets it apart from the paprika museums. Those focus on cultivation history, traditions and growing areas; the manufactory focuses on the production process. When choosing your cultural activities, you can therefore decide whether you would rather explore paprika or a craft process.
An annual museum event in June
The Viski Károly Múzeum in Kalocsa takes part in Múzeumok Éjszakája every June. The exact dates vary. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the date for the relevant year before making your plans. June is therefore a recurring time of year to keep in mind, but the event does not take place on a fixed calendar date.
More to explore in Bács-Kiskun
The wider destination of Bács-Kiskun also offers cultural and nature-related experiences beyond Kalocsa. The Tiszaalpár, Földvár educational trail explores the history of the Bronze Age fortification of Tiszaalpári Földvár and the way of life of people in the Bronze Age. In Tiszaalpár, a reconstruction of an Árpád-era village, built to mark the millennium, also depicts the settlement layout discovered during local excavations.
In Kiskunhalas, the Kiskunhalasi Csipkeház és Csipkemúzeum introduces you to the history of Halas lace, which began in 1902. You can admire lacework dating back centuries and see the process of lace embroidery. This offers a different cultural focus from the paprika-related themes in Kalocsa.
For a nature experience in Bács-Kiskun, there is also the Boróka educational trail in Bugac. It is 1,100 metres long and features information boards and interactive stations, including a forest xylophone and a play telescope. The examples in Bács-Kiskun thus range from archaeological history and lace to an educational trail with information boards and playful activities.
