Homokmégy offers several different reasons to stay: landscape history at Halomi-högy and in Örjeg, folk art and village history, and activities around Székes-tó. The range extends from Bronze Age pottery finds to observing a diverse variety of plant and animal life. If you are considering a holiday rental as a base for your stay, you can choose your focus based on the landscape, local history or time by the lake.

Landscape between archaeological finds and Örjeg

Halomi-högy lies in the Homokmégy area and, at 106 m, is the highest point in the landscape unit. Bronze Age vessels were found there while vineyards were being cultivated. This place thus brings together the landscape and an archaeological context dating back to the Bronze Age.

Örjeg, formed from a former branch of the Danube, is also known by the names Sár, Turján and Vörös mocsár. It formed the eastern boundary of the landscape. Since the beginning of the last century, flood control has substantially changed the character of what was once a water-rich area; today, field names on the outskirts of Homokmégy are the main reminder of this former wetland. At the same time, a diverse variety of plant and animal life can be observed in the Őrjeg area of Homokmégy. The names handed down over time and the observable diversity of species thus offer different perspectives on the landscape.

The pilgrimage route also passes through Homokmégy, adding a distinct connection to pilgrimage to the landscape themes. You can therefore choose to focus on landscape history, nature observation or a pilgrimage route.

Folk art and local history

The Homokmégy exhibition space covers the history of local traditional dress and folk motifs, the area’s hunting past, old tools and the history of the village. Folk art is displayed in the tájház. If you are planning to visit, check the latest visitor information beforehand. The themes thus place a broad look at local history alongside a distinct focus on folk art.

The restored Kálvária stands on the outskirts of Homokmégy and is open to visitors. It is advisable to check the visiting arrangements in advance. The church of the medieval village of Sármégy is in Szentegyházpart, which belongs to Homokmégy. It adds a further connection to medieval village life to the history of the area.

Cheese and time at Székes-tó

The Sajtház, Homokmégy’s agrotourism exhibition house, welcomes interested visitors. Its focus is on cheese-making and cheese tasting. If you are interested, check the latest visitor information beforehand, as this description does not include a current schedule.

Picnics are possible at Székes-tó and in its surroundings. There are plenty of play facilities for families, and cooking in a cauldron (bográcsozás) is also an option. The area around the lake offers a different focus from cultural and landscape history: the activities described here include picnicking, play facilities and cooking. If you choose Homokmégy as a place to stay, you can tailor your focus to the topics that matter to you.
