Dunapataj combines nature around Lake Szelidi with evidence of local history. The lake, which is about five kilometres long, belongs to Dunapataj; its surroundings include saline meadows and pastures. The lake and the areas around it have been protected since 1976 and are part of Kiskunság National Park. When choosing your destination, you can therefore first ask yourself whether you want to focus on the lake, the culture of the town, or both.

Lake Szelidi: Enjoy swimming and nature

There is an 800-metre-long beach on the southern shore of Lake Szelidi, and the lake is suitable for swimming. The beach’s operating schedule may vary seasonally, so check the latest information before your visit. This will help you plan your day of swimming while keeping in mind the natural area around the lake.

Another way to explore the lake is the Kékmoszat nature trail. It is 2.4 kilometres long, has twelve stations and can be explored on foot or by bicycle throughout the year. Swimming and the nature trail offer different ways to enjoy the same lake: one focuses on a visit to the beach, the other on exploring a set route. The trail’s length and number of stations give it a clear structure; you can follow it on foot or by bicycle.

Local history and culture in Dunapataj

The Kossuth Monument was erected on 14 December 1894. On 15 March, it is the site of national commemorations. The anniversary links a specific construction date with an established commemorative occasion in the town, offering insight into Dunapataj’s public culture of remembrance.

Another cultural and historical highlight can be found in the Reformed cemetery: almost 200 carved, human-shaped wooden grave markers can still be seen there, and they are considered an ethnographic curiosity. Their number, woodwork and human form make these grave markers a distinctive subject alongside the monument and the lake.

The Pataji Museum houses its collections and also hosts concerts and cultural events. The museum and events thus complement the natural and local history with a cultural focus. If you would like to include an event in your plans, check the latest dates.

More themes in the wider destination of Bács-Kiskun

The wider destination of Bács-Kiskun also offers a variety of themes for a trip focused on culture and nature. In Tiszaalpár, the Tiszaalpár, Földvár nature trail presents the history of the Bronze Age fortification of Tiszaalpári Földvár and the way of life of people in the Bronze Age. In Kiskunhalas, visitors can learn about the history of Halas lace at the Kiskunhalasi Csipkeház and Lace Museum, admire centuries-old lacework and see the process of lace embroidery. The history of this lace began in 1902.

Another regional point of comparison is the Boróka nature trail in Bugac. It is 1,100 metres long and features information boards and interactive stations, including a forest xylophone and a play telescope. Compared with the 2.4-kilometre Kékmoszat nature trail by Lake Szelidi, it is shorter; the two trails therefore offer routes of different lengths and different station experiences. These regional themes add to the picture of Dunapataj without equating the town’s distinctive features with those of other places in Bács-Kiskun.

If both matter to you, you can take both interests into account when planning your trip.
