Mountain location between slope and river
Sikea is a mountain settlement on the northeastern slopes of Kastourma, a spur of the Origanos. It lies on the left bank of the Poriaris River, on a hill west of the road from Nafpaktos to Makrinou, at an altitude of 360 metres. This situates the village using several concrete reference points: slope, river, road and elevation. Together, these details combine a topographical description with clear orientation based on named places and terrain features.
The references to the hill and the northeastern slopes complement one another: the hill describes the village’s immediate location, while Kastourma places Sikea in a specific part of the Origanos. As a spur, Kastourma is part of a larger mountain system. “Left bank” is also a precise directional reference: it means the left side of the river when looking downstream. The altitude of 360 metres answers a different question from the road reference: it describes elevation, while “west” locates Sikea in relation to the named road. The road, riverbank and slope therefore describe different spatial relationships; none of these details replaces the others.
Church and local history
The fortified Sotiro Church in Sikea is part of the area’s cultural history. It is associated with the armatole captain Thanasis Sakarelos. The term “fortified church” brings together two aspects of the building in a concise name: its religious function and its fortified character. This makes Sotiro a specific point of reference in the village’s history, distinct from its general mountain and river setting.
Thanasis Sakarelos himself is also part of local history. He came from Sykiá Famila and owned a fortified tower house there, with loopholes and escape tunnels. The church and tower house are two separate architectural references: the Sotiro Church is associated with Sakarelos, while the tower house was his property. Loopholes are openings in a fortification; the term “escape tunnel” refers to a passage used for fleeing. These details make the tower house’s fortified character concrete without equating it with the church.
The place name and historical figures
Another trace of local history lies in Sikea’s former name. The village was formerly called Χονδροκωστέικα, after its first settler, Κώστας Χονδροκώστας. He was born in 1795. The name’s history thus leads to a specific person: the former village name preserves its connection to the first settler, while the year 1795 dates his birth. This places his biography in a specific time period.
The former village name and the references to Sakarelos tell different stories: one points to the first settler, while the others concern the church associated with the captain and his tower house. This distinction helps attribute the birth year 1795 to Chondrokostas’s biography and keeps the two historical figures separate.
