Menidi lies on the northeastern side of the Ambracian Gulf in northwestern Greece and is a municipal unit of the Municipality of Amfilochia. Set amphitheatrically with views over the gulf, the town sits on the foothills of Mount Makrynoros. Its location combines a clear connection to the water with a second landscape setting at the foot of the mountain. The beach and wetlands offer different perspectives on Menidi and its surroundings; they are distinct areas that are particularly appealing in different seasons.
Summer at Menidi Beach
Menidi Beach is ideal for swimming in summer. You can also watch the sunset over the Ambracian Gulf from there. This means two different beach experiences in the same season: swimming during the day and evening views across the gulf. Together, they make the beach a clear focal point for a summer stay. Sailing boats and recreational boats also shape the season: Menidi attracts these boats in the summer months. Alongside the beach activities, they add a distinct maritime note to the town.
Birdwatching in the wetlands
A different focus lies northwest of Menidi. Birdwatching is possible in the nearby wetlands of the Ambracian Gulf, particularly in the winter months; hundreds of rare bird species overwinter around the gulf. The number of species that overwinter explains why the winter months are especially appealing for birdwatching around the gulf. The wetlands are about one kilometre away, reached via the coastal road northwest of Menidi. This short, approximate distance makes them a nearby but distinct destination. Birdwatching can thus be distinguished as a nature-focused activity from the beach experiences in Menidi.
Summer or winter: choose when to travel
The difference is clear when choosing when to travel: in summer, swimming, sunsets, and the seasonal presence of boats take centre stage; in winter, birdwatching in the wetlands comes to the fore. The Ambracian Gulf remains the shared geographical reference point, but the activities take place in different locations. The beach and sunsets are part of Menidi, while the wetlands lie northwest of the town. If you have a particular experience in mind, you can plan your stay around the season.
A dated cultural event
For 21 August 2026, the Municipality of Amfilochia listed the Varkarola of Menidi at Menidi Beach in its cultural programme. The date has now passed; if you would like to include an event in a future trip, check the schedule for the year you plan to travel.
Choose a holiday rental based on your reason for travelling
You can put this distinction to practical use when searching for a holiday rental. First, decide when you want to travel and then tailor your search to the experience you want to shape your stay. A trip focused on the beach and swimming therefore falls in a different seasonal window from a stay where birdwatching is the deciding factor.
