Around Vasiliki, there are discoveries on a range of themes: the history of an ancient city, Byzantine church ruins, a fortified site at a former harbor, and a beach with fine sand and clear water. Several points of interest are nearby, some specifically in Káto Vasilikí. So visitors planning a trip combining culture and coast will find different kinds of places to explore. For orientation, it is helpful to retain the place names: Chalcis is in the area of Káto Vasilikí, while other ruins are located west of the village or near Varasova.

Ancient Remains near Káto Vasilikí

East of Káto Vasilikí, the ancient city of Chalcis is located on the coastal hill of Agia Triada. The remains of the walled city have survived, and the ruins of its acropolis are also on the hill. Chalcis is also mentioned in Homer’s Iliad. This site therefore brings together architectural evidence and a literary connection.

The Chalcis archaeological site can be reached via the national road from Chania Gavrolimnis or via Exit 2 (Gavrolimnis interchange) on the Ionian Motorway. Check current road conditions and signage before setting out.

Church Ruins and the History of the Fortress

On Agia Triada, within the walls of the early Christian basilica, lie the ruins of a small Byzantine church. Another church ruin is west of Káto Vasilikí: on a low hill near the village and southeast of Varasova stand the ruins of an 11th-century Byzantine church dedicated to Agios Dimitrios. The two sites differ in their location and architectural context.

On the southeastern side of Varasova, the walls of the fortified Pangalí Castle have survived. Sections of the wall stand above Kavrolimni (Limnopoula), which was formerly a harbor. The castle controlled the harbor and served as an additional defensive outpost. Thus, in addition to city and church ruins, the historic points of interest include the former defense of a harbor site.

West of Káto Vasilikí, the Cave of Saint Nicholas contains ruins of a monastic complex with a fortress-like character.

The Beach and the Trawta Festival

Limnopoula Beach lies between Kryoneri and Káto Vasilikí and is known for its fine sand and clear water. Its connection to Káto Vasilikí is therefore different from that of the remains on Agia Triada farther east.

At the village beach in Káto Vasilikí, sardines are grilled during the Trawta festival (seine-net fishing).

If you are looking for a hotel in Vasiliki, it helps to decide what matters most for your stay: ancient history, Byzantine churches, the history of fortifications and harbors, or the beach. These points of interest are nearby, but are associated with different place names. When planning, use the precise names: Chalcis and several church ruins are located in or west of Káto Vasilikí, while Pangalí is associated with Varasova and Kavrolimni.
