Six concentric pairs of walls encircle the entire hill at Dimini; the high walls are still preserved today. This layout makes the settlement itself an archaeological subject: Dimini is about not only individual finds, but also the way the hill was laid out. Sesklo and the Athanasakeion Archaeological Museum in Volos provide further points of reference, bringing the Neolithic and later periods into a broader context.

Neolithic settlements and their finds

Dimini is Europe’s oldest and most distinctive Neolithic settlement. It is also home to two impressive Mycenaean tholos tombs. The settlement and tombs represent two different historical points of reference within the same place. The Archaeological Park of Sesklo is one of Europe’s most important prehistoric settlements. The term Sesklo culture refers to a Neolithic cultural phenomenon associated with the development of pottery decoration and settlement organization.

The collection at the Athanasakeion Archaeological Museum in Volos features finds from across Thessaly dating from the Neolithic to the Roman period. Notable Neolithic finds include pieces from Sesklo and Dimini. The names of the two settlements thus also appear in the context of the broader Thessalian collection.

Ancient traces in Demetrias and Pherae

The Archaeological Park of Demetrias was founded in 294 BC by the Macedonian king Demetrius I Poliorcetes. Pherae was an important ancient city in Thessaly and played a significant political and military role from the Archaic to the Roman period. The two sites offer a different historical focus from the Neolithic settlements: Demetrias is associated with a specific foundation date, 294 BC, while Pherae’s political and military role spanned several ancient periods.

Villages and landscapes of Pelion

Pelion stretches across eastern Magnesia and is administratively part of four municipalities: Volos, Zagora-Mouresi, South Pelion and Rigas Feraios. Its villages are known for their traditional architecture, stone mansions and cobbled lanes. Alongside the history of the archaeological sites, the built character of entire villages offers another point of interest.

Beach access, winter sports and the coast

At Mylopotamos Beach, a short path with steps leads from the parking area down to the beach. The Pelion Ski Center has five slopes ranging from easy to challenging, as well as a cross-country ski trail and a snow park. The slopes therefore offer a defined range of difficulty levels, while the cross-country trail and snow park round out the winter sports facilities.

The beaches along the Almyros coast include Almyros, Amaliapoli, Nies, Lefki Pteleou, Loutra Pteleou and Achilleio. Amaliapoli and Achilleio have facilities for accommodating sailing boats that are circumnavigating the Pagasetic Gulf or stopping over on their way to or from the Northern Sporades. Thus, along this coast, named beach destinations and stopovers for sailing boats offer different points of reference.

Thessaly as a wider context

In the wider destination of Thessaly, KTEL intercity buses connect the region to Athens and Thessaloniki via Volos. In Volos, travelers can transfer to regional buses serving the villages of Pelion. Also in Volos, tsipouradika serve tsipouro, usually alongside seafood and vegetable dishes.
