A rocky peninsula divides the small Aegean bay of Damouchari into two smaller coves. The village lies below Mouresi and was formerly called Tamouchari. The coastal landscape, traces of history and trails toward Tsagarada offer different ways to shape a stay. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the route descriptions: they refer to different trails and starting points.
Coves, Harbour and Coastal Landscape
The small harbour lies to the north, and Old Damouchari beach to the south. These landmarks help locate the bay’s two sections: the rocky peninsula separates them, while the harbour and beach are situated along different parts of the coast.
Old Damouchari is accessible and covered with white pebbles. At the end of the beach, the deep Halorema Gorge opens out, with lush wild vegetation growing in it. The landscape thus shifts from a pebble beach to a deep, vegetated gorge. The southern stretch of coast therefore connects the beach and gorge rather than being limited to the shoreline.
The small harbour still resembles a traditional shelter for small boats. The northern bay once served as the harbour of Mouresi and as a fishing settlement. These are different perspectives: the resemblance to a shelter describes the harbour’s character today, while its function as a harbour and a fishing settlement belong to the history of the northern bay.
Historical Traces in the Village
The ruins of the walls of a medieval castle stand on the peninsula. The old Church of Saint Nicholas, which is in good condition, stands at the northern entrance to the village. The two structures offer different historical points of interest: the medieval remains of the castle walls are its defining feature, while the church is notable for its dedication to Saint Nicholas and its good condition. Those interested in cultural history while travelling will find these two specific local landmarks alongside the coastal landscape.
Trails between the Beach and Pelion
A trail from Tsagarada to Damouchari is 3 km long, descends and ends at Damouchari beach. Check local conditions before setting out. A paved trail leads from Old Damouchari onward toward Tsagarada and Fakistra beach. The descriptions differ in focus: the first gives the length, descent, starting point and destination; the second describes the surface and direction. For the shorter trail, the key detail is its connection from Tsagarada to the beach; the paved trail is identified by Old Damouchari and its direction toward the destinations mentioned.
Damouchari also lies on the fifth section of the Long Pelion Trail. This section connects Hania with Tsagarada and is 24 km long. The 24 km refers to the entire stage between these places, not to the 3 km trail from Tsagarada to Damouchari beach. For hikers on the trail, Damouchari can serve as an overnight stop before they continue the uphill section the following day. The two routes therefore represent different scales: a described connection to the beach and a longer hiking stage.
