Agios Georgios Nileias Milies combines a location between mountain ridges below the Pelion summit of Evzona with churches, museums, and several hiking trails. When planning your visit, it is worth considering the area’s culture and trails as distinct aspects of the place: historic buildings shape the village, while hikes range from walks to springs to routes leading to other villages.

Location and Architecture on Pelion

Áyios Yeóryios Nileías lies between two mountain ridges below the summit of Evzona, also known as Schitzouravli. This location creates a striking landscape setting for a stay in the village.

Its architectural character includes merchants’ houses with neoclassical elements, traditional Pelion tower houses, and stone farmhouses. Those interested in architecture will find several distinct points of reference, from neoclassical details on a merchant’s house to Pelion tower houses and stone farmhouses.

The church of Agios Athanasios was built in 1795 by master builder Dimos Zapaniotis, also known as Zhipaniotis. It is considered an example of 18th-century vernacular architecture. Its year of construction and this classification make the church a distinctive part of the village’s history.

Churches, Sculpture, and Museums

Áyios Yeóryios Nileías was the birthplace of the sculptor Níkola (1909–1990). He bequeathed many of his works and a large sum of money to the municipality. Today, the village has a municipal museum dedicated to the sculptor Níkola. His birthplace, bequest, and museum provide a concrete historical context for the connection between the artist and the village.

Another house is dedicated to ecclesiastical history: the Ecclesiastical Museum of Áyios Yeóryios Nileías was founded in August 1995 by Avrelía Vafeiádi. She was the sister of the sculptor Níkola Pavlópoulos. The two museums represent different cultural themes—ecclesiastical history on the one hand, and the sculptor’s work on the other.

The Aloni open-air theater was also founded in 1995. It lies on the route from Agios Lavrentios to Áyios Yeóryios Nileías, before the route reaches the village. Those exploring the village’s history can thus consider a theater as a distinct cultural point of reference alongside its churches and museums.

Walks and Hiking Trails

A walk in Áyios Yeóryios Nileías leads beneath beech and plane trees to springs and fountains, as well as to the Ai-Lias chapel and the old monasteries of Megas Sotiras and Agia Triada. This route combines natural and cultural heritage: water sources and trees sit alongside the chapel and monasteries as distinct destinations along the way.

The lower hiking route to Tsangaráda starts at the square in Áyios Yeóryios Nileías, crosses the Kourventeli ridge, and ends at Taxiarchon Square in Tsangaráda. Both the ridge and the squares in the two villages are key landmarks for navigating this route. It is a different kind of outing from the walk to the springs and monasteries in the village.

A 2018 municipal technical study describes the route to Pinakátes. It starts just outside the village and descends from the main road. At first, the path is easy to identify through dense maquis; later, it becomes less distinct, and increasingly dense vegetation makes progress more difficult. If you plan to take this route, check current trail conditions.

Another ascent starts at the trail junction in Áno Lechónia beside the railway station and leads to the square in Agios Georgios, at an elevation of 620 m. The ascent is estimated to take about two hours; conditions and your own pace may affect the duration. This provides an approximate time and destination for assessing the route, while the ridge and the two squares serve as landmarks on the route to Tsangaráda.
