Filoti can be explored from several angles: a church in Klefaros, cultural attractions and crafts at Fassolas, village life around Gefyra Square and a hillside section of Trail 2 each offer something different. This variety is particularly helpful when planning your trip. You can weigh up cultural heritage, everyday culture and a scenic route, rather than reducing Filoti to a single attraction.

Church, Collection and Places of Remembrance

The Church of Panaghia Filotitissa is in the Klefaros district. The Numismatic Collection “Nikolas Moustakis” offers a different perspective: it contains coins and banknotes that circulated during the Bulgarian occupation of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. A religious site and a collection focused on a clearly defined historical subject thus stand side by side.

The marble Fountain of Othon stands in front of the castle entrance and commemorates King Othon’s visit to Filoti in 1833. Filoti also has an ancient-style theatre for sports and entertainment, as well as a cenotaph commemorating war heroes. Each offers a distinct focus: a visit remembered, cultural use and remembrance.

Fassolas: Everyday Culture and Craftsmanship

Fassolas is an old district in Rachidi, one of Filoti’s smaller settlements. Smili’s grocery shop has been turned into a museum and displays packaging from past decades as well as traditional products. Alongside buildings and historical subjects, everyday life and product history are therefore also part of what shapes Filoti.

The traditional Manolara kafenio displays historic furnishings and equipment, including a hand coffee grinder and a gramophone. Together with the packaging and products in Smili’s shop, these objects bring material aspects of everyday culture into focus.

A short distance uphill from Fassolas is Nikos Moustakis’s workshop. It displays and sells handmade traditional musical instruments and small handicrafts. These include tsambounes and toumbakia, bone cutlery, bells, and miniatures made from animal bones and hides. The instruments and handicrafts make music and materials a subject in their own right, alongside the historical displays.

Gefyra and Local Products

Gefyra is Filoti’s main square, with a large plane tree at its centre. Cafés, traditional eateries serving mezedes, restaurants and various shops line the square. The businesses operating there may change over time. As a way to get your bearings in the village, the square offers a different focus from the individual cultural attractions: dining and public village life come together here.

A women’s cooperative in Filoti makes and sells sweet preserves, glyka koutaliou. This complements the handmade objects from the workshop with a specific local product. If you are interested in the production and sale of regional products, the cooperative is a point of interest in its own right.

Festival and Landscape

The traditional festival in Filoti is considered the largest on the island. It is described as a three-day celebration that begins on 15 August and includes dancing to local violins. It is associated with the Feast of Panagia Filotitissa, celebrating the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

For a taste of the landscape, Trail 2 climbs from the Chapel of Irini over a mountainside covered with dense trees and vineyards. This section of the route is quite different from the cultural attractions in the village: its character is shaped by the hillside, trees and vineyards.

In the area around Filoti is Za, also known as Zeus. At 1,004 metres, it is considered the highest mountain in the Cyclades.
