Apóllon combines a small, picturesque harbor with a quiet afternoon swimming stop. A few meters outside the village entrance stands the colossal ancient marble Kouros of Apollo; nearby are also an ancient quarry, the ruins of a prehistoric fortress, and archaeological remains of a harbor. Annual festivals complement the permanent cultural sites with specific event dates. When choosing a hotel in Apóllon, you can therefore opt for a stay by the water or focus on history and local festivals.
Harbor and afternoon swim
The small harbor is a picturesque feature of the village; Apóllon is also a suitable stop for a quiet afternoon swim. The harbor and swimming break offer two different ways to experience the water during your stay: one is a specific place in the village, while the other is an activity suggestion for the afternoon. If you want to divide your time between the water and archaeology, you can treat the swimming break as a peaceful activity separate from visiting the cultural sites.
Kouroi and quarry
The colossal ancient marble Kouros of Apollo stands a few meters outside the village entrance. A footpath leads from the settlement of Apollonas to the Kouros of Apollonas site; check local conditions before setting out.
Near Apollonas, at the ancient quarry, the unfinished, eleven-meter-high Kouros of Dionysus can be seen. The slope and slopes of the quarry also contain numerous remains of other unfinished statues and architectural elements, as well as chisel marks and worked surfaces. The site offers a different perspective on ancient sculptures from the Kouros near the village entrance: here, the unfinished statue and the marks on the stone surface belong together. If you want to view sculptures not just as individual figures but also in the context of worked stone, the quarry offers a specific focus for this.
Other archaeological remains
Nearby are the ruins of the prehistoric Kalogeros fortress on a hill above the bay; remains of the ancient harbor have been found at Marmara. Together with the two Kouros sites, these places broaden the view of the area’s history: alongside sculptures and stoneworking, there are fortress ruins and an archaeological harbor find. You can also group the sites according to different interests—for example, ancient sculptures, prehistoric fortifications, or harbor history.
Festivals and dates
Apóllon hosts the Fisherman’s Feast every year on June 28. A procession with the icon is held in the village every year on the eve of the Agios Ioannis festival. The events are marked by different dates: the Fisherman’s Feast is tied to a specific calendar date, while the procession takes place on the eve of the named festival. If you want to plan your trip around an event, check the date and program details in advance.
