The museums of Apeiranthos take visitors from an Early Cycladic collection to natural history, geology and traditional working practices. To choose a cultural focus, it helps to make this distinction: Are you interested in Early Cycladic culture, local flora and fauna, minerals and rocks, or tools and textiles from the Folklore Museum? This makes it possible to organise the offerings around specific interests, rather than treating the different collections as interchangeable stops.

Early Cycladic culture and natural history

The Early Cycladic collection at the Apeiranthos Museum is among the most important of its kind worldwide and probably the third most important in Greece. This collection has a distinct focus from natural history and geology: here, the emphasis is on Early Cycladic culture, while other museums present local natural specimens or mineral materials. This makes the collection a distinct point of reference when choosing a theme.

The Natural History Museum of Apiranthos on Naxos displays numerous specimens of local flora and fauna. It is divided into one section focused on the sea and another on the land. The collection includes an aquarium, a shell collection, dolphin skeletons and whale bones. The combination of natural specimens and specific exhibits makes the natural history focus tangible; at the same time, the division into sea and land offers two clear perspectives. If you prefer natural history to rocks and ores, you will find a different thematic focus here.

Geology, work and traditional objects

The Geological Museum of Apeiranthos began in 1964, at the initiative of Manolis Glezos, as a small collection of minerals, rocks and ores in the Apeiranthos primary school building. Its beginnings as a small collection give the geological focus a specific history. The museum’s “Naxos Hall” was established in 2016; a former hall was redesigned for the exhibition “The Aegean Sea and the World.” The years refer to different milestones: 1964 marks the start of the collection, while 2016 marks the establishment of the Naxos Hall. Alongside rocks and minerals, the history of the collection and changes to the museum spaces are also available as themes.

The Folklore Museum of Apiranthos displays tools for cultivating, harvesting and threshing crops, as well as for making bread. These activities connect agricultural work with the journey from field to bread. The collection also includes the instruments dubaki, tsabouna and souvliari, traditional costumes and woven fabrics. This selection complements the tools with instruments and textiles: the focus thus ranges from practical activities to traditional forms of clothing and music. This sets the Folklore Museum apart from both the natural history and rock collections and the Early Cycladic collection.

Choose a cultural focus

To help you decide, consider what kind of collection interests you: Early Cycladic culture, natural history divided into sea and land, minerals and rocks, or agricultural work alongside instruments and textiles. Each collection has a different emphasis; these differences offer a concrete guide to weighing up the cultural themes according to your own interests.
