Mavrovouni Beach is a prominent landmark in the immediate vicinity of Kamaria: a long coastline of very fine, golden sand that is mostly open to the public and unorganised. Anyone considering Kamaria as a travel destination and taking the surrounding coastline into account will find a clearly defined beach profile here. Its length, the individual beach bars and the lack of natural shade are relevant to different ideas of a day at the beach. Mavrovouni can therefore be considered a destination in its own right when planning a trip.
Location and names
Geographically, Mavrovouni lies less than a kilometre outside Finikounda, between Finikounda and Methoni. The beach is about one kilometre west of the centre of Finikounda; it also stretches towards the road to Methoni. Mavrovouni Beach lies between Finikounda and Methoni; at the same time, it is west of the centre of Finikounda. This distinction is useful for local orientation because the two distance descriptions do not use the same reference point.
Mavrovouni is also known as Makrynammos or Kamaria. The name Kamaria comes from the nearby, sparsely populated settlement of Kamaria. This explains the similarity in names: the beach also bears the name of the nearby settlement.
Sandy beach and beach character
The open sandy beach is about 2 to 2.5 kilometres long. Very fine, golden sand stretches along the entire coastline. Its approximate length makes Mavrovouni a substantial stretch of coastline: when planning your day, you can treat the beach as a destination in its own right rather than just a brief stop.
The beach is mostly open to the public and unorganised. There are a few beach bars near the campsites and at the Windmill. If you are planning to visit a particular beach bar, please check its availability in advance, as this may change. If you are mainly looking for a largely open beach, you can take this basic layout into account when deciding on your trip; the individual bars are limited, isolated facilities. If you expect a consistently organised beach setup, you should also bear this distinction in mind.
There is no natural shade on the beach. If you plan to stay for a long time, take this into account when preparing for your visit.
Getting there and special access
The beach is reached via the Finikounda–Methoni provincial road. Check local conditions before setting off. The road is the practical route for getting there; the beach’s location between Finikounda and Methoni also helps with geographic orientation.
There is a special SeaTrac access point for people with reduced mobility at the stretch of beach by the Windmill. This information applies to that section. As availability may change, please check before your visit whether access will be available then.
