The Palace of Nestor is the best-preserved Mycenaean palace on the Greek mainland. For those interested in Messinia’s early history, it is a striking place to start: the modernised archaeological site features new visitor-route infrastructure with information and communication technology, providing convenient access for all visitor groups. A visit therefore combines a glimpse of a significant building with an orientation that takes different visitor groups into account.

Coastal castles with distinctive outlines

Methoni Castle stood at the crossroads of Mediterranean sea routes and was one of the most important fortresses of its time in the Greek world. Its location can be seen in the scale of the complex: it covers 93 stremmata and extends about 400 metres out to sea along a narrow strip of land. One distinctive feature is its connection to the offshore Bourtzi. A stone bridge leads from the Sea Gate to this sea fortress.

Koroni Castle has a different form: it stretches across a low peninsula in Messinia, covering about 62 stremmata. At the southwestern end of the peninsula, beside the medieval fortress, stands the Church of Panagia Eleistria. It is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Messinia. The peninsula thus brings together a fortress complex and a place of worship, while Methoni, with its stone bridge and Bourtzi, offers a particularly clear view of the layout of a sea fortress.

Ancient sites and their stories

The Archaeological Museum of Ancient Messene displays representative finds from excavations in Messene, carried out from 1895 to the end of the 20th century. Important sculptures convey the significance and historical role of Ancient Messene as a political and artistic centre of the ancient Greek world. The selection makes a museum visit an opportunity to connect the archaeological finds with the role of the ancient city.

Peristeria offers a distinct historical focus: during the Early Mycenaean period, it was the wealthiest settlement centre in the western Peloponnese. Natural paths have been preserved at the archaeological site, offering an alternative way to explore and climb to the top of the hill. These paths provide a different perspective on the site from examining artefacts in a museum; here, history can also be experienced as landscape and settlement.

Coastal landscapes and nature trails

Voidokilia Bay is part of a biotope complex that includes Gialova Lagoon, Navarino Bay and the island of Sfaktiria. The complex is included in the European Natura 2000 network. There is one practical point to note about the beach: Voidokilia is not an organised tourist beach, so bring everything you need with you.

The Neda River forms a natural boundary between Ilia and Messinia, and river trekking is possible in its gorge. The Neda Gorge can be reached from Figaleia, Agios Sostis and Ampeliona. The Neda route includes a seven-metre-high waterfall and another nearby waterfall with a drop of 20 metres. The river and its striking waterfalls are both highlights of the area.

For climbing enthusiasts, the areas described differ in their terrain and routes. Near Kalamitsi Beach, Kardamyli has three climbing areas on limestone cliffs, with 33 low- and moderate-difficulty routes reaching heights of up to 60 metres. Nedousa climbing park has more than 50 routes of varying difficulty. Route numbers may change as the climbing areas develop.

Olives and wine from Messinia

Olive oil and olives from Messinia have Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status; the region’s dry white and red wines are products with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status. These designations give regional products a distinct place in Messinia’s culinary discoveries.

The “Historic Messenia and the olive routes” tour includes a visit to an olive grove and an olive tasting. Confirm the arrangements with the provider in advance. In Pyrgos Trifylias, the “Nestor” Messinian Agricultural/Wine Cooperative is a winery open to visitors; check the current visiting arrangements before your trip.
