Vouno is a medieval village with narrow, winding lanes and covered passageways between the houses. These features give the place a distinctive architectural character: lanes and passages are part of the image of a village whose paths wind between the houses.

Rocky Setting and Nearby Beaches

Vouno lies almost entirely on a rock. Its medieval village structure is therefore complemented by a striking natural setting and a distinctive aspect of the landscape. Vouno is also located in an area where mastic-bearing schinos shrubs grow. The shrubs are part of the local landscape; at the same time, mastic points to a topic that also plays a cultural role across the wider destination of Chios.

The beaches of Lilikas, Komi, Gridia and Vokaria are near Vouno. Vokaria also has a small harbor. This gives you two distinct interests to consider when planning your trip: Vouno’s medieval village character and the named coastal spots nearby. When choosing accommodation, you can consider which of these priorities matters more for your stay.

Cultural and Landscape Highlights on Chios

On Chios, Nea Moni combines historic architecture with Byzantine art. The monastery was built between 1042 and 1056 and is considered an undisputed masterpiece of Byzantine art. Its mosaics belong to one of the three collections from the Middle Byzantine period preserved in Greece. The construction period and the artworks offer two different perspectives: the monastery’s origins in the 11th century and the place of its mosaics in art history.

The Chios Mastic Museum offers another perspective on mastic. Its permanent exhibition presents traditional knowledge about mastic cultivation; the outdoor exhibition brings visitors into contact with the mastic plant and its natural habitat. The museum opened to the public in 2016 and has free parking. Check the parking information before your visit.

Architecture on Chios also has a range of distinctive features. Mesta is a medieval village preserved as a monument. The settlement is laid out like a castle: its closely packed houses form a protective outer wall. In Pyrgi, by contrast, the focus is on façade decoration. The “Xysta” there are black-and-white geometric patterns on house façades. Pyrgi is also home to the Temple of Agioi Apostoloi, a well-preserved Byzantine monument dating from the 14th century. Thus, Chios’s architectural highlights range from the overall layout of a medieval village to the design of individual façades and a Byzantine building.

The Kampos adds a cultural landscape to this picture: this unique settlement and agricultural complex combines an outstanding natural landscape with distinctive local architectural features. For walks, narrow roads run between citrus groves and estates enclosed by high stone walls. This is a different landscape from Vouno’s rocky setting and offers a distinct way to discover Chios through the connections between settlement, agriculture and architecture.
