Thimianá on Chios brings together a cultural focal point in the village and nearby beaches. During the Mostra, groups set off from Vournou Square along the main street; churches shape the local cultural landscape, and a monastery stands on a hill east of the village.

The Mostra: Dance and Music in the Village

During the Mostra, groups meet at Vournou Square and proceed together along Thimianá’s main street. The battle is reenacted through the “Talími” dance, accompanied by bagpipes and drums. The meeting point, procession through the village, dance and music give the event a clear cultural connection to Thimianá. Anyone interested in traditions and performing arts will find this a concrete point of interest when choosing where to stay.

Churches, a Monastery and Nearby Beaches

The Church of Agios Efstratios is a domed basilica and is considered the second-largest church on Chios. Thimianá is also home to the Church of Agios Dimitrios. East of the village, the Monastery of Agioi Anargyroi stands on a hill and offers a special view. Together, a church notable for its size, another place of worship in the village, and a hilltop monastery offer varied cultural and scenic highlights.

For a different focus, the beaches of Karfás, Mégas Limniónas and Agiá Fotía are near Thimianá. If you want to include both culture and coastline in your travel plans, these beaches can be considered alongside the Mostra and the churches when choosing where to search for accommodation.

More to Discover on Chios

Beyond Thimianá, Chios offers further insights into its architectural heritage. Mesta is a medieval village preserved as a monument. Its closely packed houses form a fortress-like settlement and a protective outer wall. In Pyrgi, the “Xysta” are black-and-white geometric decorations on house façades. Because of their detailed façade patterns, Pyrgi is often called the “painted village.” The two places showcase different architectural features: the fortified village layout of Mesta and the geometrically decorated façades of Pyrgi.

The history of monasteries and mastic are also among Chios’s cultural themes. Nea Moni Monastery was built in the 11th century, between 1042 and 1056. Its mosaics are part of one of three surviving collections in Greece from the Middle Byzantine period. At the Chios Mastic Museum in Pyrgi, the permanent exhibition presents traditional knowledge about mastic cultivation. The outdoor exhibition introduces visitors to the mastic plant and its natural habitat. The museum opened to the public in 2016.

Kampos on Chios offers a different perspective on the landscape. There, narrow roads between citrus groves and estates with high stone walls invite visitors to stroll. Traffic in the area is light, so cycling is also possible; check current road conditions before setting off. Walks through this cultural landscape and cycling trips offer a different experience from the village architecture of Mesta and Pyrgi or the history of Nea Moni.
