The port of Agia Ermioni serves as both a marina and a fishing harbor. There is a slipway for boats at the port. It also provides sufficient shelter from the wind in both summer and winter. Together, these features give a concrete impression of the village’s maritime character.

Water in the port is supplied free of charge through the municipal network and the network of the municipality. If you are relying on this supply in your planning, check its current availability locally. Nearby Agia Ermioni is Megás Limniónas, with its sandy beach. This means you can choose between two distinct points of reference: the port as a feature of the village and a nearby beach.

Chios: Villages, Art and Crafts

As a wider travel destination, Chios offers a broader look at historic architecture, monastic art, crafts and landscapes. In Mesta and Olympoi, for example, you can compare how houses were joined together to form defensive structures. Mesta is a medieval village preserved as a monument; its closely built houses are arranged like a castle and form a protective outer wall. In Olympoi, interconnected houses once formed a defensive wall.

Pyrgi also brings together architecture and village history. The “Xysta” are black-and-white geometric decorations on house façades. The detailed façade motifs explain why Pyrgi is often called the “painted village.” The village is also home to the well-preserved Temple of Agioi Apostoloi, a Byzantine monument dating from the 14th century.

Anavatos is a medieval Byzantine tower village in the central region of Chios. Visitors can stroll along its cobbled streets. The Church of Taxiarchis is well preserved; the so-called “Three-Storey Building” contains an olive oil press, a school, a water cistern and the Church of the Theotokos. These sites offer different points of interest for anyone interested in historic village layouts and preserved buildings.

Monastic Art, Mastic and Cultural Landscapes

Nea Moni Monastery was built between 1042 and 1056. Its mosaics are part of one of three collections from the Middle Byzantine period preserved in Greece. Another way to explore the region’s culture is through the Chios Mastic Museum in Pyrgi: it opened to the public in 2016. The permanent exhibition presents traditional knowledge about mastic cultivation; in the outdoor exhibition, visitors can encounter the mastic plant and its natural habitat. The museum has free parking. Check current availability before your trip.

Kampos combines settlement and agriculture with an outstanding natural landscape and distinctive local architectural features. Narrow roads run between citrus groves and estates with high stone walls, inviting visitors to take a stroll. Traffic is light in the area, making it suitable for cycling, too. Armolia, meanwhile, has a long tradition of making ceramic vessels, including jugs, vases, pots, bowls and cups. Chios thus offers everything from distinctive villages and Byzantine art to knowledge of mastic, ceramics and routes through a cultural landscape.
