Askos is in the north of Zakynthos. The village has a chapel dedicated to Saint Gerasimos. When choosing where to stay, it helps to distinguish this local connection from the island’s other natural and cultural attractions: not every sight on Zakynthos is a feature of Askos.
Askos and the Wider Island Area
The chapel in Askos is dedicated to Saint Gerasimos and is a specific religious landmark in the village. In the wider area of Zakynthos, Askos Stone Park lies in the north of the island. Around 170,000 wild-sown plants grow there, including shrubs and trees; hundreds of animals also live in their natural habitats.
The park also includes old stone structures, including stables and water cisterns carved into the rock many centuries ago. The plants, animals, and historic buildings are distinct aspects of the park. This helps distinguish the chapel’s local significance from a natural and cultural attraction elsewhere in northern Zakynthos.
Art and History on Zakynthos
The Museum of Zakynthos displays works from the Cretan School, Cretan-Ionian icons, and works of Ionian naturalism dating from the 15th to the 19th century. The collection thus encompasses different artistic traditions and a broad historical period. This context is useful for orientation: the museum represents art history, while other places on Zakynthos have personal or religious commemorative significance.
A mausoleum is located on the ground floor of the Museum of Solomos and Eminent Zakynthians. Since 1968, it has housed the remains of the national poets Andreas Kalvos and Dionysios Solomos. The Monastery of Agios Georgios sta Gremna in Volimes, founded in 1535, is another historic landmark. The museum, mausoleum, and monastery represent different themes—art, remembrance of poets, and monastic history—and should not be confused with the individual feature of Askos.
Landscape, Ferry Connection, and Local Products
The island’s natural attractions are also in different locations across Zakynthos. The Blue Caves are in the Aspros Vrachos area at Cape Skinari. Lake Keri is a wetland protected under the Ramsar Convention, a Natura site, and a nature reserve within the National Marine Park of Zakynthos. The Keri Lighthouse is known for panoramic views at sunset, overlooking the Ionian Sea and the Myzithres rocks. These examples have different features: sea caves at the cape, a protected wetland, and a viewpoint overlooking the sea and rocks.
Agios Nikolaos port in Volimes is also relevant when planning a trip around the island: it is a maritime gateway and connects Zakynthos with Kefalonia by ferry. Check the current timetable when making specific plans. Elsewhere on Zakynthos, Zakynthian Ladotyri cheese is produced in Volimes at dairies and home workshops and sold as a local product; individual producers may vary.
