Alikanás is a village and is considered an extension of Alykes. Along the beach connecting the two settlements, it is difficult to tell them apart on a walk. Alikanás Beach continues Alykes Beach; its final section is noticeably deeper, and it ends at a small harbor for fishing boats. This makes both the course of the beach and the harbor important landmarks for navigating the coast.
Comparing Two Beach Sections
The older beach in Alikanás lies farther south along the coast, outside Alykes Bay. It is smaller than the better-known beach in Alikanás and is distinguished by clear water and fine sand. The two beach areas differ mainly in their location and size: the better-known beach continues Alykes Beach and ends at the fishing harbor, while the older section lies outside the bay. Keep this geographical distinction in mind when comparing the beach areas.
Boat trips to the Blue Caves and water sports are also associated with Alikanás Beach. If you are considering either, check in advance whether it is available on your travel dates. This lets you plan beach time and possible activities separately without assuming current availability.
Zakynthos: Nature, Art, and Island Culture
Beyond the coastal beaches, Zakynthos offers other themes to explore on a trip: nature, art, history, and local products. The Blue Caves are in the Aspros Vrachos area at Cape Skinari. Another natural attraction is Lake Keri: it is a wetland protected under the Ramsar Convention, a Natura site, and a nature reserve within Zakynthos National Marine Park. The island therefore offers two distinct natural landmarks: a coastal formation and a wetland with multiple layers of protection.
The Museum of Zakynthos displays works from the Cretan School, Cretan-Ionian icons, and works of Ionian Naturalism dating from the 15th to the 19th century. The Museum of Solomos and Eminent Zakynthians offers another perspective on history: since 1968, the mausoleum on the ground floor has housed the remains of national poets Andreas Kalvos and Dionysios Solomos. The Monastery of Agios Georgios sta Gremna in Volimes was also founded in 1535. The art collections, mausoleum, and monastery each focus on different aspects of history.
The Keri Lighthouse is known for panoramic sunset views over the Ionian Sea and the Myzithres rocks. Agios Nikolaos Harbor in Volimes may also be relevant to your travel plans: as a sea port, it connects Zakynthos to Kefalonia by ferry. Check the current timetable if this connection is important to you. In Volimes, Zakynthian Ladotyri cheese is also made in dairies and home workshops and sold as a local product. Individual producers may change.
