Putting Stavrochori and Kilkis in context

Stavrochori can be considered at two levels when planning a trip: as a place in its own right and as part of the wider Kilkis destination area. The village is 8.5 kilometers from Kilkis. Stavrochori is also situated beside the Thessaloniki–Doïráni National Road and the Thessaloniki–Alexandroupoli railway line.

Culture in the village

A description dated November 16, 2021, mentions a folklore museum in Stavrochori that opens by prior arrangement. If you plan to visit, arrange your visit in advance. This makes the museum a cultural stop to plan specifically rather than an impromptu visit.

Nature and cultural destinations in the wider Kilkis area

The wider Kilkis destination area includes several nature and cultural destinations, each with a distinct focus. Lake Doirani is a wetland and a habitat or stopover for numerous resident and migratory birds; dense reeds and lakeside vegetation are characteristic of the area. Visitors can follow the lakeside path from the village of Doirani to the Forest of a Thousand Trees.

The Mouries Forest, also called the Forest of a Thousand Trees, is designated a natural monument and covers 590 stremmata. This also identifies the lakeside path’s destination as a named natural area.

The Museum of Lake Doirani is also part of the wider Kilkis destination area. It is open daily from 08:00 to 14:00 for visits and guided tours by student groups, and is also open to residents and visitors to the municipality. Check the opening hours again before setting out. Unlike the folklore museum described in Stavrochori, it has daily opening hours rather than requiring prior arrangement. These different visiting arrangements are useful to keep in mind if you plan to include both museums in your itinerary.

Another natural attraction in the wider Kilkis area is Pikrolimni, a shallow lake beside the village of the same name. It usually dries up in summer. Its clay bed contains sulfur compounds and nitrates, and is attributed with healing and cosmetic properties. The lake and its clay bed offer two different points of interest: the seasonal character of the water and the particular properties of the soil. As natural destinations in the wider Kilkis area, Lake Doirani and Pikrolimni differ in landscape and seasonality: Lake Doirani is a wetland with resident and migratory birds and a lakeside path leading to the Forest of a Thousand Trees; Pikrolimni is shallow and usually dries up in summer. Its clay bed, with sulfur compounds and nitrates, adds to this natural profile.
