Goumenissa brings together wine traditions, religious and secular history, as well as walking trails and a waterfall at the Two Rivers site. When planning your trip, you can consider these themes separately: a wine route and wine offerings in the wider region sit alongside cultural sites in the town and a walking destination near Goumenissa.

History and Culture

The French Fountain stands in Goumenissa’s central square. It was built in 1918 on the site of an older fountain and commemorates the French presence in the town and its wider surroundings. A route offers the chance to explore Goumenissa’s lanes, squares and significant monuments.

After liberation, the Old School of Goumenissa served as a school until 1970, after which it housed citizen service centres and associations. It was an intellectual centre for the region, particularly during the Ottoman period. Its history thus encompasses its former use as a school, its regional significance and the building’s later functions.

The Holy Monastery of Panagia Goumenissa is a monastery for men and is associated with the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary of the same name. It is also a pilgrimage site. These religious connections add a religious and cultural perspective to the secular histories of the fountain and the school.

Chrysallida is now used as an exhibition and museum space. Visits are possible only by prior arrangement and appointment with Christodoulos Papakostas. If you plan to visit, be sure to make arrangements in advance.

Wine and Regional Offerings

Goumenissa is an important part of the Pella–Goumenissa Wine Route, one of the wine routes of Northern Greece. The dry red PDO Goumenissa wine contains the local red grape variety Negosca as well as Xinomavro. This places the town within a wine route while also describing a specific wine. The local Negosca grape gives the wine its connection to the area.

In the wider region, you can visit wineries along the Axioupolis–Goumenissa–Fyliria corridor, taste wines and get information about grape harvests and wine tourism. These offerings cover the entire corridor, not Goumenissa alone. Arrange visits with the wineries in advance.

Walks and Local Traditions

At the Two Rivers site near Goumenissa, shady paths beneath densely leafed plane trees invite you to take a walk. There, a natural waterfall flows into a natural stone-lined pool. If you would like to include a nature-related activity alongside the cultural sites in your travel plans, this place offers a focus of its own.

The Bronzes of Goumenissa accompany the Epitaphios procession every Good Friday and perform at local festivals. If a performance is important to your travel plans, check the specific event dates; individual event arrangements may vary.
