The Balkan Botanical Garden of Kroussia gives Pontokerasia a botanical focus. Native plants, waterfalls, artificial lakes, landscaped paths, streams, observatories and natural meadows shape the garden. Peaceful walks through the village offer a different perspective on the area than the paths through the garden grounds. When deciding where to travel, there are therefore two distinct local themes to choose from: plants and landscaped nature in the garden, and walks through Pontokerasia.

Botanical Diversity in the Garden

The remaining 160 acres of the Balkan Botanical Garden of Kroussia are dedicated to preserving plants from the Greek flora, including rare and endemic species. This conservation sits alongside landscaped features such as artificial lakes and paths, as well as natural meadows and streams. In this way, the garden combines different landscape elements with a clear botanical focus. For travellers interested in Greek plant life, the rare and endemic species are a distinctive feature of the area.

Garden Paths and Village Walks

The walking trails pass through rock gardens and medicinal and aromatic gardens, alongside waterfalls, small lakes and streams, and through landscaped paths, meadows and woodland. Information boards provide details about the plants. Both the different garden areas and the plants themselves are therefore part of the trail experience. These features give the garden its variety: themed beds sit alongside water features and areas of meadow and woodland.

Pontokerasia is also suited to peaceful walks through the village. This differs from the garden paths, where plant areas and landscaped features take centre stage. When choosing a destination, you can therefore consider whether the botanical garden or a peaceful walk through the village better suits your interests. Both themes offer a concrete way to get to know Pontokerasia.

Additional Nature and Cultural Themes in Kilkis

The wider destination of Kilkis is home to other nature and cultural attractions. Lake Doirani is a wetland that serves as a habitat or stopover for numerous resident and migratory birds. Dense reed beds and shoreline vegetation characterise the lake. Visitors can follow the path along the shore from the village of Doirani to the Forest of a Thousand Trees. In contrast to the garden in Pontokerasia, the focus at Lake Doirani is on wetlands, birdlife and shoreline vegetation.

The Mouries Forest, also known as the Forest of a Thousand Trees, is designated a natural monument and covers 590 stremmata. Its name, protected status and area characterise this natural attraction in Kilkis. Pikrolimni also has a distinctive seasonal feature: the shallow lake lies beside the village of the same name and usually dries up in summer. Its clay soil contains sulphur compounds and nitrates and is said to have healing and cosmetic properties.

One cultural attraction in the wider destination of Kilkis is the Lake Doirani Museum. It is open daily from 08:00 to 14:00 for visits and guided tours for school groups, and is also open to residents and visitors to the municipality. Check the opening hours again before your trip.
