On the Isle of Gigha, cultural history, gardens, night skies and coastline offer different ways to shape a trip. Historic sites range from prehistoric burials to a 13th-century church. There are also the Achamore Gardens, opportunities for stargazing and paths through the moorland. This can help you decide which aspects of the island match your interests and what you would like to focus on during your stay.

Cultural history on Gigha

Kilchattan Church was built in the 13th century and dedicated to Saint Cathan. At Càrn Ban, eight or more people were buried around 4,000 years ago. Gigha is also home to one of Scotland’s oldest surviving Gaelic texts, written more than 1,400 years ago. Gaelic was the island’s first language for much of the 20th century. These traces span a broad period, from the burials to the early Gaelic text and the church.

Fisherman's Cave is also part of the island’s history: fishermen used it as shelter on long fishing trips or in bad weather. Those interested in such traces of culture and landscape will find both architectural and archaeological points of interest on Gigha.

Gardens and views

The landscaped grounds of Achamore House include a remarkable 20th-century garden and a renowned plant collection. Colonel Sir James Horlick began creating the rare and exotic collection in 1944; its quality and variety contribute to the garden’s outstanding horticultural value. On clear days, views from a viewpoint in the Achamore Gardens stretch as far as Islay and Jura.

The Achamore Gardens are around a 20-minute walk from the ferry pier along the island’s main road. The walking time is approximate. The garden and its views offer a different focus from the archaeological sites, with the landscaped grounds and plant collection taking centre stage.

Stargazing and guided walks

Gigha has a Milky Way-class Dark Sky Discovery Site. The Dark Sky Theatre has an information board about the night sky, benches and stargazing leaflets. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check what is available before travelling. Dark Skies Gigha holds a Dark Skies Festival every November; confirm the dates before planning your trip around it.

The Isle of Gigha Ranger Service offers family-friendly guided walks and events. Guided walks take place every Wednesday from May to September. Check the dates for the seasonal programme before your visit. The stargazing activities and ranger walks offer different focuses: one turns your attention to the night sky, while the other takes you out to explore the island.

Coast, nature and trails

Gigha has sandy beaches and clear turquoise sea. Otters hunt along the coast, while the peatlands provide habitats for wildlife and store carbon. The Sound of Gigha is classified as a Special Protection Area. The protected marine area of the Sound of Gigha offers opportunities for tourism, surfing, kayaking, diving and wildlife watching.

The trails described on land also differ in character: a waymarked track crosses the moorland in the west of the island, while a waymarked path offers views to the south and towards Northern Ireland. Check current trail conditions and waymarking before setting out. Trails on Gigha also pass the ruins of historic settlements.

Activities on the water and on land

The Gigha Boats and Activity Centre rents out kayaks, paddleboards, wetsuits and snorkels. Bicycles and e-bikes are also available to rent. The centre is just a short walk from the ferry pier. Equipment availability and booking arrangements may change; the available fleet of bicycles and e-bikes may also vary. Check these details in advance if your plans depend on them.

Another sporting option on Gigha is a nine-hole golf course with panoramic views of the island and the mainland. Visitor arrangements may also change. If you are weighing up different activities, you can choose between wildlife watching, water sports, bike hire and golf without assuming they are part of a single programme.
