Bridge of Orchy brings together several aspects to consider when planning a trip: walking trails towards Glen Orchy and Glen Lyon, the River Orchy as a launch point for kayakers, and distinctive buildings. If you are looking for a hotel, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay: sections of the West Highland Way, a connection to Glen Lyon, or the local buildings?

Mountains and trails through the landscape

Beinn Dòrain is a Munro east of Bridge of Orchy and reaches 1,076 metres. From the summit, Loch Lyon can be seen to the northeast. These details give the mountain a clear profile: its location, elevation and viewpoint are all specified. The main summit of Beinn an Dòthaidh is 1,004 metres high. When planning a route, it is worth keeping the named mountains and trails in mind separately, rather than inferring a particular walking time from the summit information.

Forest trails accessible from Bridge of Orchy lead into the heart of Glen Orchy. The West Highland Way runs near Bridge of Orchy Forest. For walkers who do not want to complete the entire route in one trip, Bridge of Orchy station makes it possible to plan individual sections of the long-distance trail. This is a different approach from choosing a route with a set destination in another valley: you can focus on one part of the West Highland Way rather than the whole route.

Walking connections and choice of activities

The section of the West Highland Way from Tyndrum to Inveroran has a consistently good trail surface, with some ascents and descents. The route passes through broad valleys and impressive mountain scenery. This describes both the trail conditions and the character of this stage, without implying a walking time. Bridge of Orchy station is a useful planning option if you want to choose individual sections rather than the entire route.

The Glen Lyon Loop takes a different direction: this walking route runs from Bridge of Orchy over the pass by Ben Doran to Glen Lyon. The route from Bridge of Orchy to the head of Glen Lyon is 16 miles long. Mountain bikers can follow the walkers’ waymarkers from Bridge of Orchy to Glen Lyon. This offers a choice of activities and destinations; the 16-mile figure refers specifically to the route to the head of Glen Lyon.

The Black Mount Military Road can also be identified by its named stops. It starts in Bridge of Orchy and ends at the Kings House Hotel. Its route crosses the Bridge of Orchy, climbs through the forest over Mam Carraigh, and continues to the Inveroran Hotel. Its course and named points therefore distinguish it from the route over the pass by Ben Doran to Glen Lyon.

At the River Orchy, there is a car park with a picnic area that serves kayakers as a launch point onto the river. If you are planning an activity on the water rather than a walk, this is a specific place to consider. The forest trails to Glen Orchy and the West Highland Way’s proximity to Bridge of Orchy Forest offer a different starting point for deciding which part of the area suits your stay.

Bridge, station and Parish Church

The Bridge of Orchy over the River Orchy lies on the Old Road to Ballachulish and Fort William. Bridge of Orchy station was built in a distinctive Swiss chalet style. The station also has a former North British Railway Company signal box of type 6a. The bridge, station and signal box each have their own significance: the first is associated with the old road connection, the second with architecture, and the third with its former function as a signal box.

Bridge of Orchy Parish Church is a small, whitewashed building with a grey slate roof and red-painted gutters and downpipes. It lies on the A82 between the car park and the Bridge of Orchy Hotel and is a stop on the West Highland Way. The church can therefore be identified both by its architectural features and by its location on the road and long-distance trail.

Getting there and planning an overnight stay

The car park and picnic area at Bridge of Orchy can be reached via the A82 and by public transport. If you are planning an activity at this location, check the current connections and timetable before setting off.
