Whisky, Architectural History and Literature

The Jura Distillery was founded by Laird Archibald Campbell in 1810 and officially licensed in 1831. After closing in 1901, it was rebuilt and reopened in 1963 by architect William Delme-Evans. The timeline therefore includes a significant break between closure and reopening.

The Classic Distillery Tour takes visitors through the production area and explores the history of the distillery’s single malt whisky. The tour must be booked in advance. Alongside the historic milestones, the production process is also a focus of the visit.

The Old Pier at Small Isles Harbour in Craighouse tells another chapter of the area’s history. Thomas Telford built the L-shaped pier in 1814. Barnhill (Knockintavill) also has a literary connection: George Orwell lived in the remote private house while completing his novel 1984.

Peaks and Water

The Paps of Jura offer a hiking challenge comprising three mountains. The peaks are Beinn an Òir, Beinn Shiantaidh and Beinn a’ Chaolais; the mountains offer panoramic views across the island and surrounding sea. If you want to make hiking the focus of your visit, the three named peaks and views across the island and water provide concrete points of reference to help you choose what interests you.

For wildlife watching on the water, Jura Boat Tours offers RIB excursions. Wildlife you may see includes dolphins, porpoises, seals, otters and white-tailed eagles. Corran Sands offers a different experience: the beach is a shallow, sheltered place to swim. The main difference between the two options is the type of nature experience—watching wildlife from a boat or swimming in the water.

More Experiences and Island Products

The mobile, wood-fired Bothan Jura Wild Sauna operates at different locations; Craighouse, near the Whisky Gallery, is one of them. In 2026, you can book individual sessions there when the sauna is operating at this location. Check availability before you travel.

Jura Cycles rents out eight adult bikes and two children’s bikes by the day or week; helmets are included. As availability and prices may change, it’s advisable to check both for your travel dates.

Lussa Gin also has a clear connection to the island: it is made using botanicals sourced locally on Jura and pure spring water from the island’s hills.

Getting There and Where to Stay

The ferry between Port Askaig and Feolin carries vehicles and foot passengers on a turn-up-and-go basis. As operating details and service patterns may change, check the current timetable before travelling.

When looking for a hotel on the Isle of Jura, you can start by choosing the focus that appeals to you: whisky and architectural history in Craighouse, hiking on the Paps of Jura or activities on the water.
