Creuzburg Castle, its permanent exhibition and the stone Werra Bridge give Amt Creuzburg a distinctive historical character. Circular hiking trails and boat landing stages offer other ways to spend your time here. Creuzburg is a district and the namesake of the town of Amt Creuzburg; Mihla is also part of Amt Creuzburg. The attractions are spread across both places: castle and town history shape Creuzburg, while Mihla offers, among other things, a town hall museum, the Red Palace and the Dr. Ernst Wiedemann Baths.

Castle, Museum and Architectural History

The permanent exhibition at the castle museum in Creuzburg Castle covers the history of the castle, town and judiciary, as well as the history of the Thuringian landgraves. Music history is also represented through Michael Praetorius (c. 1572–1621), composer and music theorist. The exhibition thus spans the local area and its landgraves, as well as a notable figure in music history. Creuzburg Castle was built between 1165 and 1170. It was probably a favourite place of Saint Elisabeth.

The buildings themselves reflect different historical periods: the stone Romanesque Werra Bridge in Creuzburg was built in 1223. The Liborius Chapel, dating from 1499, stands right beside it. The bridge and chapel are each distinctive landmarks in the area’s architectural history.

Mihla: Museum and Red Palace

The museum in Mihla Town Hall explores rural life, the nobility and wars in western Thuringia. Its focus is therefore on social life and conflict, while the permanent exhibition at Creuzburg Castle covers the history of the castle, town and judiciary, as well as the Thuringian landgraves. If you are interested in cultural history, you can explore a range of different topics across the destination.

The Red Palace in Mihla is another distinctive architectural landmark. Completed in 1581, it is a half-timbered palace in the Renaissance style. Together with the town hall museum, it gives visitors in Mihla a choice between a museum devoted to specific themes and a historic building with a clearly defined architectural style and period.

Hiking, Landing Stages and Summer Swimming

There are several signposted circular hiking trails around Creuzburg. They range from 2.5 to 14 kilometres in length and vary in difficulty. You can choose in advance between shorter and longer routes and different levels of difficulty. Check current trail conditions locally before setting out.

Creuzburg also has two boat landing stages with rest areas. If you plan to use them, check before setting out that they are still in operation. The Dr. Ernst Wiedemann Baths in Mihla have solar-heated pools and attract thousands of swimmers in summer. As the baths operate seasonally, we recommend confirming their current opening dates before your visit. The trails, rest areas and baths each offer a different way to shape your stay.

Part of Wartburg District

Within the wider Wartburg District destination, Creuzburg Castle is one of Germany’s larger Romanesque castle complexes. It is more than 830 years old, has a perimeter wall measuring over 340 metres and encloses an area of 7,400 square metres. These figures add another perspective on the castle to the local information about its construction and exhibition.

For the wider Wartburg District destination, timetable and passenger information is available for bus services, hiking buses, buses with bicycle trailers and rail services. If your travel plans depend on a connection, check the current timetable information for your specific journey.
