Berka v.d. Hainich is located right on the southwestern edge of the Hainich, one of Germany’s largest beech forest areas. The village offers two distinct starting points for planning a trip: traces of a former moated castle tell the story of the village, while trails near Mallinde take the Hainich as a starting point for hikes in the surrounding area. This makes it possible to focus your stay on the village’s history or add a specific route.
Local history between the moated castle and the local history room
Berka v.d. Hainich was first mentioned in official records in 1035. The village pond, the substantial foundations of the manor house and the remains of artificially created ditches recall the former moated castle. These traces give the village’s history a tangible connection: the pond, walls and ditches are reminders of the former moated castle, while the year provides a historical reference point of its own.
The Berka v.d. Hainich local history room preserves a large collection of historical photographs and displays them in changing exhibitions. Original clothing and traditional costumes from the region are also part of the collection. This brings together different ways of exploring local and regional history: photographs are shown in changing displays, while clothing and traditional costumes add historical garments to the collection. Visits are possible by appointment. So arrange a time in advance if you would like to include the local history room in your stay.
Compare hiking trails near Mallinde
The Silberborn nature trail introduces visitors to the secrets of the forest at nine stations with Alruna, the forest seer. Two distances are given for choosing a route: the blue trail is 2 km long and the red trail is 2.8 km long. A northern section runs from the Mallinde to the Silberbornlinde and back along the same route. This 2 km round trip is suitable for wheelchair users and has gradients of up to 5%. The suitability information applies to this section; check current conditions before your visit.
Another option is the Sulzrieden circular hiking trail. It starts at the Mallinde hiking car park, 1 km northeast of Berka v.d. Hainich, passes the Silberbornlinde and the abandoned settlement of Sulzrieden on the southern slope of Burgberg, then returns to the car park. The two trails have different points of focus: the nature trail centres on the forest stations and stated route lengths, while the abandoned settlement is one of the waypoints on the Sulzrieden circular trail.
