Wiesenthal offers two distinct discoveries: a landscape shaped by sheep-grazed pastures and calcareous grasslands, and the history of the village. Hiking trails lead through the surrounding area; everyday objects at the Dorf-Aktiv-Museum offer insight into the village’s history of commerce. You can tailor your stay to whether you would rather spend most of your time outdoors or learn about village life.
Calcareous Grasslands and Plants of the Wiesenthaler Schweiz
The Wiesenthaler Schweiz lies south of Wiesenthal. The area, which covers around 34 hectares, includes the eastern and northern slopes of the Tageleite as far as Ruckenschloss. It is characterised by sheep-grazed pastures in the northern Kalkrhön, as well as semi-dry grasslands and small patches of dry grassland. This open landscape, shaped by grazing, differs from the beech forests that are also among the hiking destinations described around Wiesenthal.
Various plants grow in the Wiesenthaler Schweiz, including the single-tuber honey orchid, the man orchid, the fly orchid, the early purple orchid, the common pasqueflower and the fox orchid.
Another nature attraction is the yew grove on the Neuberg. This continuous stand of yew trees is one of the largest in both Germany and Thuringia. It extends across the districts of Neidhartshausen and Wiesenthal, as well as Glattbach and Dermbach, and attracts nature lovers and hikers. The municipal boundaries are therefore useful to bear in mind when including this area in your plans.
Hiking Trails and Route Selection
The long-distance hiking trail Der Hochrhöner® passes through Wiesenthal. Other hiking trails run along the pastures and calcareous grasslands on the Neuberg, as well as through beech forests over the Hoher Asch to the Wiesenthaler Schweiz. Before setting out, check the current trail markers so you can follow the route on the ground.
To choose the focus of your hike, you can decide between open landscapes and forest trails: the pastures and grasslands define the Neuberg, while the trails over the Hoher Asch pass through beech forests on the way to the Wiesenthaler Schweiz. Plan your stages according to your own needs and the current trail conditions.
Fortified Church and Dorf-Aktiv-Museum
St James’s Church stands on elevated ground at the eastern edge of Wiesenthal and is an old fortified church. The Dorf-Aktiv-Museum Wiesenthal offers another way to explore local history. It was established in 2013 in a half-timbered house on the village green that had undergone extensive renovation. The church and museum offer distinct points of interest: the historic fortified church at the edge of the village, and a museum in a renovated half-timbered house on the village green.
The museum displays a restored historic shop interior in its original location. Together with everyday objects, it offers insight into the village’s history of commerce. Visitors interested in everyday life and trade in the village will find a specific focus here, distinct from the natural attractions along the hiking trails.
The Wiesenthal e.V. Association for Local and Regional History organises children’s tours and activities at the Dorf-Aktiv-Museum that relate to the current exhibition theme. These offerings are therefore tied to the exhibition. The museum is listed as open on Sundays from early May to the end of October, from 2 pm to 6 pm. As seasonal opening hours can change, confirm the times with the museum before your visit.
Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests
When choosing accommodation for a stay in Wiesenthal, your planned activities can help guide your decision: the Wiesenthaler Schweiz, the Neuberg and the trails over the Hoher Asch offer different landscape experiences, while the church and Dorf-Aktiv-Museum focus on local history. If you would like to include both, check the museum’s opening hours and the current trail markers in advance, then decide how much time to allow for hiking and a museum visit.
