Rastenberg combines local history with hiking and cycling options. This gives you two main focuses to choose from: historic buildings in town and outdoor activities in the Finne landscape. When looking for a holiday apartment for your stay, you can decide whether to focus on traces of the past or on the trails.

Town Hall, Church and Defensive Structures

Rastenberg’s town hall was built in the Renaissance style in 1565. On 14 May 1636, it burned down during the Thirty Years’ War; it was rebuilt on the same site later that year. The sequence of construction, fire and rebuilding makes the town hall a striking starting point for exploring local history.

The Church of St. Kilian was Rastenberg’s oldest church. It stood close to the present-day cemetery and fell into disrepair around 1550. Two well-preserved defensive towers with loopholes stand between the town gates. The church, town hall and defensive structures offer different perspectives on local history: religious history, civic architecture and defence.

The Rastenberg Camping Cinema offers another cultural dimension: visitors can still see its old, working projection equipment. This adds a technical theme and a different perspective on local culture to the architectural traces of the past.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

The Finne Hiking Trail passes directly through Rastenberg. From here, you can hike one way to Eckartsberga or follow a circular route through the town. Check distances and the route before planning your specific hike.

Circular trails, a geological educational trail and cycling routes start in Rastenberg, either at the town hall or at the outdoor swimming pool. These trails are in the Finne protected landscape area. The options vary in type: there are circular trails as well as an educational trail and cycling routes.

Rastenberg outdoor swimming pool has been in operation since 1925 and features almost 5,000 square metres of water, historic changing cabins and a promenade hall. If you plan to visit the pool, check its current opening status in advance.

Sömmerda in the wider travel region

The wider Sömmerda travel region adds a focus on town fortifications and industrial history. According to chronicle accounts, Sömmerda’s Erfurt Gate was built in 1395 as an entrance to the town, as part of the existing fortifications. It was one of the first of five town gates in the town wall, which was expanded from 1589 onwards. Sömmerda’s historic town wall is well preserved thanks to continuous restoration and renovation.

The Historical and Technical Museum in Sömmerda presents the town’s 200-year industrial development—from the founding of the Dreysesche Gewehrfabrik (Dreyse Rifle Factory), through Rheinmetall’s production sites, to the office machine factory in the former GDR.

Sömmerda’s town park also has a history of its own: it was created as a public municipal garden and opened at Whitsun in 1903. This adds garden history to the town’s fortifications and industrial heritage. When choosing a destination, you can distinguish between the two focuses: Rastenberg combines local history with hiking options, while Sömmerda offers a different emphasis on town fortifications and industrial history.
