Kannawurf brings together castle history, a Renaissance garden and a location close to the Wipper River. These offer different points of interest for your stay: the castle represents architectural history, the garden adds its own distinctive touch, and the riverside location gives the town its setting. The Tour de Frömmschdt adds a cycling outing, whose route passes through Kannawurf and which takes place on a set date in August.

Kannawurf Castle and Renaissance Garden

Kannawurf Castle was built in the Renaissance style in 1562/1565 under the direction of Georg II Vitzthum von Eckstädt. The year, architectural style and named director make it possible to place the castle’s construction history in a specific context. The castle has a construction date, while the garden has its own completion date.

The Renaissance garden at Kannawurf Castle was completed in 2020 and is open at all times. Together, the castle and garden represent two different periods: the construction history of the Renaissance building and a garden completed later. If you are planning your stay around a particular date, this distinction is also useful when comparing it with the cycling tour in August.

Riverside Location and Cycling Tour in August

Kannawurf lies close to the left bank of the Wipper River. The riverside location adds a geographical point of reference to the themes of architecture and gardens.

The family-friendly Tour de Frömmschdt cycling tour takes place every year on the third Saturday in August. It starts at the market square in Sömmerda and passes through Leubingen, Griefstedt, Büchel, Etzleben, Gorsleben, Kannawurf and Kindelbrück before ending in Frömmstedt. Kannawurf is a stop along the route; the start is in Sömmerda and the finish is in Frömmstedt. The tour partly follows agricultural tracks and cycle paths alongside roads. If you are choosing this cycling tour as the reason for your trip, check the exact date before making plans.

Kindelbrück: Nature and More to Explore

The wider destination of Kindelbrück includes Gründelsloch, a karst fissure spring and allegedly bottomless water hole west of the town of Kindelbrück. The spring discharges approximately 15,600 litres of water per minute and is considered the strongest spring in Thuringia. Its almost circular pool is nearly 22 metres in diameter and 9 metres deep. The town gates are also among Kindelbrück’s attractions.

The SSG Kindelbrück club swimming pool has beach facilities, a football pitch, a large sunbathing lawn and slides. The outdoor pool is not open to the public; visitors can use it by ringing the bell and becoming day members. Ask about current access options before visiting.

The Stone Age Trail was completed in summer 2022. Near Griefstedt, it branches off from the Unstrut Cycle Route and leads along an extensive wildlife enclosure to Kindelbrück. In the wider destination, this provides another option alongside Gründelsloch: a trail with a clearly described route, as well as the local attractions.
