Kindelbrück combines a distinctive natural feature with local sights and a route leading into the town. To the west lies Gründelsloch, a karst fissure spring and a supposedly bottomless pool. Other highlights include the city gates and the “Stone Age Trail”, which leads from Griefstedt to Kindelbrück. This gives you several different focuses to consider when planning your trip: a natural feature, sights in town, and a club swimming pool with regulated access.

Gründelsloch: a distinctive karst spring

Gründelsloch discharges approximately 15,600 litres of water per minute and is considered the strongest spring in Thuringia. The almost circular pool is nearly 22 metres in diameter and 9 metres deep. Its spring type, water outflow and pool dimensions make Gründelsloch a distinctive natural attraction in its own right. If you are looking for a specific nature-related focus when choosing a destination, this karst fissure spring is one of the notable landmarks in Kindelbrück.

City gates and the Stone Age Trail

The city gates are among Kindelbrück’s sights. The “Stone Age Trail” was completed in summer 2022. Near Griefstedt, it branches off from the Unstrut Cycle Route and leads to Kindelbrück alongside an extensive wildlife enclosure. The two highlights therefore offer different experiences: the gates are a sight within the town, while the trail is a route from Griefstedt, past the wildlife enclosure, to Kindelbrück.

The club swimming pool and its access rules

The outdoor swimming pool of SSG Kindelbrück is not open to the public. It can be used by anyone who rings the bell and becomes a day member. The club swimming pool has beach facilities, a football pitch, a large sunbathing lawn and slides. If you would like to include the pool in your stay, check with the operator about day membership and the current availability of the facilities before your visit. The access rules are therefore just as much a part of planning as choosing which facilities you would like to use.

More topics in the wider Sömmerda destination area

The wider Sömmerda destination area has its own cultural and landscape attractions that are not part of Kindelbrück. In Sömmerda, the town park was laid out as a public garden and opened at Pentecost in 1903. The Historical and Technical Museum presents the town’s 200-year industrial development: from the founding of the Dreysesche Gewehrfabrik to Rheinmetall’s production sites and the office machine factory in the former GDR.

The Erfurt Gate and the historic town wall are also part of Sömmerda’s history. According to chronicle records, the Erfurt Gate was built in 1395 as an entrance to the town, as part of the existing fortifications. It was one of the first of five gates in the town wall, which was expanded from 1589 and is well preserved thanks to continuous restoration and renovation. In Rastenberg, local circular trails, a geology trail and cycling routes start at the town hall or the forest swimming pool; they lie within the Finne Landscape Protection Area. The 91.7-kilometre Finne Hiking Trail is a long-distance hiking trail in Central Germany. A section can also be walked as a circular trail in the Rastenberg area.

Choose your accommodation focus

When looking for accommodation, it helps to decide whether Kindelbrück itself will be the focus of your trip or whether you would like to include independent destinations in the wider Sömmerda destination area. Base your search on the places and topics that matter for your stay. If you plan to visit the club swimming pool, include day membership in your plans.
