Wasungen offers several themes to consider when planning a trip: the Forestry Botanical Garden, trails for hiking and cycling, and a strong carnival tradition. The historic town center is also part of the town’s cultural character. When choosing your accommodation, first consider what you want your stay to focus on—the garden and trails, the carnival, or other destinations in the wider Schmalkalden-Meiningen destination.

Forestry Botanical Garden and expert-led tours

The Wasungen Forestry Botanical Garden covers about five hectares. It is home to 162 genera of woody plants, with 1,700 different species and varieties. Its size and diversity make the garden a particular point of interest for anyone interested in woody plants. Visitors who would like to learn more about the grounds can take a paid expert-led tour. Tours are available by advance booking, so registration and the fee should be included in your plans.

Distinguishing between hiking trails and the cycling route

The local circular trails lead to different destinations. Circular Hiking Trail 1 goes around the Forestry Botanical Garden. Circular Hiking Trail 2 goes around the Rupperg to Kleine Zehn Buchen, while Circular Hiking Route 3 goes through the Mordtal to the OberwallbachsmĂĽhle. These destinations can help you choose a route based on your interests: one route focuses on the garden, while the other two take in Rupperg and Kleine Zehn Buchen, or the Mordtal and OberwallbachsmĂĽhle, respectively.

The Heinrich Cotta Hiking Trail is also connected to the garden: one section leads from there to the birthplace of Heinrich Cotta in Kleine Zillbach. A longer named connection is the 96-kilometer HWO2 long-distance hiking trail, which connects Wasungen with Schlitz. If you are cycling, you can use the Werratal Cycle Route as a separate reference point: it runs along the left bank of the Werra through Wasungen. This makes it easy to distinguish between local circular trails, the long-distance hiking trail, and the cycling route.

Historic town center and carnival tradition

Wasungen’s historic town center is protected as an ensemble and designated as a conservation area. A historic parade is part of the carnival festivities and takes place every year on the Saturday before Ash Wednesday. Since the date shifts with the carnival calendar, check the specific date for your travel year if the parade is a reason for your trip.

The collection at the Thuringian Carnival Museum in the former women’s convent in Wasungen documents the variety of carnival traditions in Thuringia through written records and artifacts. Together, these represent two distinct cultural themes: the protected historic town center and the evidence of the carnival tradition.

Accommodation in Wasungen

If you are planning to stay in a tent, Wasungen Campsite is right on the Werra and has recreational facilities and a fire pit. Check availability for your travel dates in advance. For other types of accommodation, the travel interests mentioned above can help guide your choice—for example, the circular trails and garden, the cycle route, or the date of the parade.

More to explore in the wider Schmalkalden-Meiningen destination

Two attractions in Schmalkalden offer different themes in the wider Schmalkalden-Meiningen destination. At Viba Nougat World, visitors can experience nougat being made in a glass-walled workshop. Hands-on confectionery courses include molding chocolate, decorating nougat, and creating pralines. Course times and booking conditions may change; check them in advance.

Also in Schmalkalden is the “Neue Hütte” blast furnace museum. The blast furnace complex dates from 1835; local iron ores were smelted there over charcoal to produce pig iron until 1924. The exhibitions explore the region’s nearly 1,300-year history of iron and steel goods production, including the “Schmalkalder Artikel.” A 45-minute guided tour focuses on the history and function of the blast furnace operation. In the wider destination, visitors can therefore explore nougat making and industrial history as well as Wasungen’s garden, hiking, and carnival themes.
