Schmalkalden can be explored through three distinctive themes: half-timbered houses, Reformation history and nougat. Half-timbered houses and Reformation history
Construction of the Church of St. George began in 1413/14, incorporating parts of an earlier Romanesque church. Its history therefore reaches back to an earlier building phase, while it is also closely connected with the history of the Reformation. At the most important meeting of the Schmalkaldic League in 1537, the best-known theologians of the time preached there. Martin Luther presented his Schmalkaldic Articles in the church.
Wilhelmsburg Castle rises above the old town. Its permanent exhibition is devoted to the era of Martin Luther and the Schmalkaldic League. In the museum, you can see, among other things, the lavishly decorated banqueting halls, the richly ornamented castle church, original room layouts with murals and stucco work, as well as the lord's kitchen and the terrace garden. For half-timbered architecture, it is worth taking a closer look at the Luther House and the Half-Timbered House Experience Center. Built around 1520, the Luther House is a half-timbered building; however, its construction date does not mean that Martin Luther lived there. The Half-Timbered House Experience Center is described as the oldest half-timbered house in Schmalkalden and is also one of the five oldest half-timbered houses in Thuringia. Visitors can explore the vaulted cellars, living rooms, stairways and crawl space, as well as the façade, masonry and wall structures, the front building and the courtyard. Along the way, you can discover the connection between historic and new architecture.
Industrial history and collections
The Neue HĂĽtte offers a different way to explore Schmalkalden's history: its excellent state of preservation makes it possible to understand an early industrial blast furnace as a complete facility. Visitors can explore the original furnace all the way around and climb to a height of over 11 metres. Here, the focus is not on individual objects, but on the facility and its spatial impact.
At the Historicum Pewter Figurine Museum, the emphasis is instead on depicted scenes: more than 20,000 fully three-dimensional, hand-painted pewter figurines are displayed across 400 m² in tableaux depicting situations from world history. The scale of the collection contrasts sharply with the rooms and architectural features that define visits to the castle and the Half-Timbered House Experience Center.
Experience nougat and plan your stay
At the Viba Nougat World, you can watch through a glass-walled workshop as smooth, meltingly tender nougat is made.
