Hümpfershausen is part of the Thuringian Rhön. A distinctive landmark to consider when planning your trip is the little mountain house on the 652-metre-high Hahnberg. A public children’s playground and the connection to the Vorderrhönweg trail add to the local attractions. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether local history, leisure activities or the connection to the Vorderrhönweg best matches your travel interests.
The Little Mountain House: Hunting Lodge and Excursion Destination
The little mountain house was built and used as a ducal hunting lodge. Following extensive construction work from the 1990s onwards, it quickly developed into a special excursion destination. Its use as a hunting lodge places the building in its historical context; its later development into an excursion destination marks a separate chapter in its history.
During a project running from July 2023 to February 2024, a small shepherd’s wagon, sheep see-saws, a photo wall and interactive information boards featuring the voices of the Rhön were installed at the little mountain house. These features offer a range of experiences: the sheep see-saws provide a playful touch, while the information boards incorporate the voices of the Rhön. Hümpfershausen also has a public children’s playground. The Vorderrhönweg trail is also connected with the village.
The little mountain house is listed as serving refreshments on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from May to October. Check these seasonal opening times before your trip.
Wasungen: Gardens, Trails and Culture
Wasungen has its own highlights. The Wasungen Forest Botanical Garden is home to 162 genera of woody plants, comprising 1,700 different species and forms, across an area of around five hectares. Expert-led tours are available for a fee and by advance booking. Circular Hiking Trail 1 loops around the garden. Circular Hiking Trail 2 loops around the Rupperg to Kleine Zehn Buchen; Circular Hiking Route 3 loops around Mordtal to Oberwallbachsmühle. The named destinations distinguish the routes: the garden, Kleine Zehn Buchen and Oberwallbachsmühle. One section of the Heinrich Cotta Hiking Trail leads from the garden to Heinrich Cotta’s birthplace in Kleine Zillbach.
The 96-kilometre-long HWO2 long-distance hiking trail connects Wasungen with Schlitz. The Werratal Cycle Path runs through Wasungen along the left bank of the Werra. Wasungen’s historic town centre is protected as an ensemble conservation area. Wasungen Carnival is another recurring cultural highlight: its climax is a historic parade held every year on the Saturday before Ash Wednesday. As the date depends on the carnival calendar, check the date for the year of your trip.
Choose the Right Focus for Your Accommodation Search
A clear priority can help you search for a holiday apartment: if Hahnberg, the little mountain house and leisure activities in Hümpfershausen are your main focus, concentrate your search on this village. If you are mainly interested in the Forest Botanical Garden, the hiking trails or the historic town centre, include Wasungen as a separate focus. First decide which place you want to shape your itinerary, then look for a holiday apartment in your preferred location.
