Discover Steinbach-Hallenberg through its craftsmanship, local history and outdoor trails. The metalworking museum focuses on workshops preserved in their original condition, while Hallenburg Castle offers a walk with views of the town and mountains. There is also a wildlife enclosure with a circular trail and seasonal horse-drawn carriage rides. Each attraction offers something different, from historic working methods to outdoor experiences.
Craft history at the Metalworking Museum
At the Steinbach-Hallenberg Metalworking Museum, you can visit workshops preserved in their original condition and see how people worked in the past. The museum has three historic workshops: a nail forge, a corkscrew workshop and a file-making workshop. The different types of workshops give visitors a tangible connection to local craft traditions.
The permanent exhibition “Ons Schdaaimicher” opened in January 2022. It offers insights into the way of life, language development and club life of the people of Steinbach-Hallenberg. Alongside the workshops, the museum therefore explores life in the town and the development of its language. Blacksmithing demonstrations take place on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. from April to October. Check the specific dates before your trip.
Hallenburg Castle, views and getting your bearings
Hallenburg Castle was built around 1212 on older building remains. A walk up offers views of the town and surrounding mountains. If you also plan to visit the tower, you may need to pick up the key from the Tourist Information Office. It is centrally located in the town center, directly opposite the Metalworking Museum.
For longer stays, free parking is available on BismarckstraĂźe or HennebergstraĂźe, behind the town church. These are two specific streets to help you find your way; the Tourist Information Office and the museum face each other in the town center.
Circular trail, wildlife enclosure and carriage ride
In the district of Unterschönau, an approximately 3 km circular trail runs alongside the Unterlautenberg wildlife enclosure. Red deer, fallow deer, mouflons and goats can be seen there. The walk combines a specific trail distance with the opportunity to observe these animal groups.
Knüllfeld is known as Steinbach-Hallenberg’s hiking plateau. During the summer holidays, regular horse-drawn carriage rides there and back to the town center are offered in cooperation with the Falk Nattermann carriage company. The ride offers views into the valley and of the surrounding mountains. Dates are published in the events calendar; check them before your trip. If you are planning a stay centered around a festival, the Burgfest is also worth considering: held in honor of Hallenburg Castle, it is celebrated as a major town festival every five years. Check the events calendar to plan your visit around the right date.
